Dubbed “slowcore” and “sadcore” in doomed efforts to slot them, AMC centred on the boozy introspection of songwriter Mark Eitzel – whom Time Out once described perfectly as “a cross between Leonard Cohen and Tommy Cooper.” More slickly produced (by Mitchell Froom) than earlier AMC discs, Mercury attains melancholy grandeur on standouts like “I’ve Been a Mess” and “Johnny Mathis’ Feet.”
