Lou Harrison -- In Honor of the Divine Mr. Handel
🧵 1/2
There I was, enjoying what seemed to me to be an interesting fusion of East and West...
I've been discovering the music of Lou Harrison.
Here's an overview of his life and work:

I came across him because I heard his Third Symphony while doing some housework. I wrapped up the housework ASAP and got on to YouTube. This symphony is a delight - of our time but totally accessible:

I then listened to his "La Koro Sutro", a setting of the Heart Sutra in Esperanto to music for choir, organ, and American gamelan:

It's quite enchanting. You'll give thanks for California making this kind of fusion possible.

Mobile home, 1917-1934: Harrison takes violin and piano lessons as a child. After his family moves to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1926, Harrison attends a different school each year because of the family’s frequent moves. In high school, he studies Gregorian chant and sings and plays in an ensemble devoted to Baroque music. Broadening experiences, 1935-1936: He enrolls for three semesters at San Francisco State College, studying horn, clarinet, harpsichord, and recorder.
