"...What I got was a damning assessment of humanity, via a deranged Sci-Fi interpolation of a possible future both harrowing and hilarious. A satirical commentary that was equal parts Philip K Dick paranoia, Bladerunner aesthetics, Hunter S Thompson political fever dream, John LeCarre espionage, Paul Verhoeven sex & violence, and Truman Capote grade camp. Manic, conspiratorial, with an almost John Wayne joins the Church of the SubGenius absurdity."

American Flagg IS The Uncanny Valley of the Future

...or a variation on a theme of a possible one. When I first picked up an issue of AF in the indie shelf at R&K Comics on the El Camino, I was only interested in the fact that it was created by Howard Chaykin, whose work on a proverbial reboot of The Shadow for DC Comics brought intense attention to a creator with a penchant for not only hard boiled crime noir, but a visual style that is still singular and inimitable (influenced as much by editorial and advertising illustrating legends like [โ€ฆ]

September Fifteen's "with the title 'biggest fan'"

"NAAN, how come for this one, you did two pairs from both your lists?"

The agenda...has become real...by my HAND!

1. Reuben/Alita: I had a different idea for them, where both were exchanging autographs or something--but that didn't really make sense for either one for different reasons. Then I remembered Alita played music once, Reuben's world is pretty retro with its music, and thus, a better idea was born.

The question is: is Reuben talking to Alita about himself or is he trying to get Alita to talk to Luther Ironheart, android helper of Plex Chicago? Maybe Clippy will know!

2. Mitchell/Motoko: this is a pairing I've thought about for decades because once again (Matrix's Morpheus voice) ~machines~ The idea for this came immediate and easy to me--after all, you can talk to Motoko through cyberbrains if you have that. Mitchell can talk to machines at any level, in any way. He doesn't need that operation!

"Biggest fan" here then becomes more about what they are *listening* to, rather than about each other in contrast to the other pic.

Probably some Nirvana song that only Mitchell knows or something.

New #DollarBinDiscovery Episode!

For some reason, it felt like a good week to take on the theme "Stars & Stripes" and we both found some wild comics from the 80s! Mike fell in love with an issue of Scout, while Jessika badmouthed Santa Claus with the American Flagg Special!

#Chaykin's #AmericanFlagg #2 really keeps the information dense, heavily political, kinda pessimistic but innovative and exciting #cyberpunk energy going. Simply some of the best #comicbooks I've read, and like an onion it has layers to its depths. #art + #story do not misstep.
Today I only got through one book in my #reading time, but what a #comicbook it was! #Chaykin's #AmericanFlagg #1 one hell of a prescient #cyberpunk story, feat. dense media saturated narrative which predicted tech like #deepfakes replacing actors to tazerknuckles seen on Tiktok.
