Quoting Odeh Bisharat, a Palestinian writer and social activist, currently op-ed columnist for Haaretz and Al-Atikhad newspapers:
[…] Europe slaughtered the Jews, and instead of paying for its crimes, it expelled those who remained. In the book Unrepentant (Hebrew title: Al Da’at atzmo) Nurit Gertz brings the words of Amos Kenan, who said: "The debt that the free world owes to the Jews, it easily threw onto the necks of the Arabs."
[…] At critical junctures, Israel's leadership chose the racist West. Even today, most Israelis prefer Donald #Trump, the racist, antisemitic with dictatorial tendencies.
[…] With all due respect to the “Jewish Genius”, the vast majority of the weapons that cause death and destruction in the region are American. It's time to say to the Americans: Enough, let us breathe.
Bisharat is discussing the historical context of the Israeli occupation of Palestine, focusing on the role of European antisemitism and the current reliance on American weaponry. Reflecting on the 1948 events in #Ramla, as depicted by Yoram Kaniuk in book title 1948 (Tasha"h), he argues that the displacement of Palestinians was influenced by Europe's desire to rid itself of Jewish populations following the #Holocaust. He contends that the Balfour Declaration itself stemmed from a similar racist sentiment.
This historical context, where Europe sought to solve its "Jewish problem" at the expense of Palestinians, continues to play out today, with the majority of weapons used by #Israel, contributing to the deaths of tens of thousands in #Gaza, being American-made. Bisharat urges the US to cease its involvement.
