The US Coast Guard still operates the light, but the city of #Fernandina Beach was given to the #tower as a #historical monument. It is open to the public for tours.

The #Amelia Island Light is said to be the oldest existing #lighthouse in #Florida, having been constructed in 1838, partly from materials from a predecessor lighthouse on Cumberland Island.
Curiously, the penultimate lightkeeper was the son of the previous keeper, and was married to a descendant of the first keeper Amos Latham.
The light was automated by the US Coast Guard in 1970.
