I couldn't decide between the two, so it's a #SundaySentence double-shot from Amal El-Mohtar's The River Has Roots.

'Grammar and grammarians are constables, sternly watching while you split infinitives, narrowing their eyes at spliced commas while smacking semi-coloned truncheons against their palms.'

'But that is the nature of grammar - it is always tense, like an instrument, aching for release, longing to transform present into past into future, is into was into will.'

Hawthornen kaksi sisarusta, Esther ja Ysabel, elävät Thistlefordin kylässä Liss-joen vieressä. Sisarukset laulavat joen vieressä kasvaville pajupuille, kuten Hawthornet on tehneet jo sukupolvien ajan. Esther haaveilee joen toiselle puolelle asumisesta Arcadia-nimiseen maailmaan, kun taas Ysabel on tyytyväinen hiljaiseen elämään kotikylässä.
