Today, we’re staying with the BMW E24 6-Series coupé. I saw this example that has been subtly but extensively upgraded by the BMW-aligned tuning house Alpina at Techno Classica Essen in 2014. Alpina occupies a roughly similar place in the BMW eco-system as AMG does in the Mercedes firmament. Although the two companies had been co-operating since the 1960s, BMW only acquired Alpina in 2022.

Lawn mownster upgrade: Added one of those cheap hour counters, so I know when the oil change is due.

Unlike the last one (vibration sensing), this one is induction sensing. You wrap the wire a couple times around the spark plug cable and that creates enough induction for a reliable signal to the unit.

In fact, the cable isn't electrically connected to the unit at all, just clamped outside in a plastic slot.

Inside is probably a simple induction sensor or maybe just another coil - I didn't open it as it's sealed against rain.
