The gorgeous Northumbrian coastal village of Alnmouth, as viewed from the wooden cross on Church Hill.
For anyone visiting Alnmouth, the distinctive hill and cross are difficult to miss, what is slightly more problematic though, is attempting to reach it.
Up until the early 19th century, it was just a short walk from the south end of the village.
Unfortunately, a storm broke through the low-lying land hereabouts and created a short-cut for the River Aln to the North Sea, cutting off Church Hill.
As my photograph illustrates, I did eventually get the opportunity to reach the hill where I later learned that, according to Bede's account in 'Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum', Archbishop Theodore presided over a synod in 684 here in the presence of King Ecgfrith of Northumbria and whereupon St Cuthbert was elected Bishop of Lindisfarne.

Signalbox - Live Train Map

Signalbox's live real-time map of Great Britain's rail network.

Looking across to picturesque Alnmouth from Church Hill on the coast of Northumberland in North East England.
Church Hill is located on the south side of the River Aln and is surmounted by a wooden cross.
It was once part of Alnmouth itself and the parish church stood on the west side of the hill.
That all changed however, during a violent storm back in 1806.
The North Sea broke through and the course of the River Aln found a new and shorter route to the sea with the hill effectively becoming cut off from the village.
I did once attempt to cross the River Aln to Church Hill at low tide (I'd heard it could be done!).
However, finding the mud in the river becoming worryingly deeper and not entirely sure of the veracity of accounts of a safe crossing, I gave up.
I eventually reached the hill from a much longer route from the south.

Ferry Hut Museum, Alnmouth, March 2025
Hailed as the county's smallest museum, two can fit in but three would definitely be a crowd. Very cute place with free entry and paid for and maintained by a local resident!
