The gorgeous Northumbrian coastal village of Alnmouth, as viewed from the wooden cross on Church Hill.
For anyone visiting Alnmouth, the distinctive hill and cross are difficult to miss, what is slightly more problematic though, is attempting to reach it.
Up until the early 19th century, it was just a short walk from the south end of the village.
Unfortunately, a storm broke through the low-lying land hereabouts and created a short-cut for the River Aln to the North Sea, cutting off Church Hill.
As my photograph illustrates, I did eventually get the opportunity to reach the hill where I later learned that, according to Bede's account in 'Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum', Archbishop Theodore presided over a synod in 684 here in the presence of King Ecgfrith of Northumbria and whereupon St Cuthbert was elected Bishop of Lindisfarne.
