Postal funtimes.

I am very glad that Fatalii package their #chilli seeds in plastic packets, as the postie simply slapped our post down in a puddle. (It was definitely wet at the time, it has been wet since I left at 06.30 this morning.)

I am somewhat less enamoured of what look very much like #GenAI #slop stickers. I had noticed some sloppish looking artwork on the website. Sigh. A pity. I don't care enough, nor am I mean spirited enough, to give feedback about how I feel about that. Though it is likely to influence future purchasing.

Anyway, this shipment brings us:

Aji Habanero
Aji Mango
Ancho Poblano
Chupetinho, White
Goronong
Habanero, Hot Lemon
Jalapeno, Yellow
Naga Morich

Plus some bonus freebies:

Rawit
Trepadeira Werner

Freebies are appreciated, though they always kind of throw out my growing plans.

Just tryin' to sit and chill a bit.

After last night a sleep in was in order. So that was nice. This morning then began with first the news that the landlord wants keys to everyone's homes in those AirBnB style code boxes next to everyone's doors... which is a big nope AFAIC. Followed by an unexpected landlord in the housing area, which we got a headsup on and I just wasn't in the mood for that sudden imposition so we upped sticks and fucked off... in which process I spilt pretty much my entire coffee on the, thankfully dark brown, carpet.

For a variety of reasons we need to move. Sadly the rental market around here is just super thin on the ground..

Now at the allotment. Have harvested. Sat in sun.

(LOL, I just fell of my fucking chair and half into a gooseberry bush, causing me to prematurely sent that post because the back leg of my chair punched through into a bloody rodent burrow!)

What surprising thing could I be sowing now, mid August, aka late summer, in Norfolk England (roughly sorta USDA 8b, but interested in varying takes on "late season" [edit to be less specific])

In this area, in a "good"* year, we can still be harvesting ripening tomatoes in October (in a polytunnel). So there can be up to about 2 decent growing months of time ahead.

We have outdoor bed space and understory space around the polytunnel tomatoes.

Today I will be sowing dwarf french beans outside, which have a good but not guaranteed chance of giving us a crop depending on the weather. That possibly isn't too surprising though!

I am thinking "surprising late season" mainly, though also "surprising over-winter" is interesting.... like I was fairly recently surprised to discover coriander grows well under cover in UK winter months. (Coriander is actually slightly frost tolerant!)

* aka: harbinger of impending climate doom racing our way...

I'm not convinced that the author of this #Allotmemt Gardening for Dummies book is convinced by no-dig growing. This being the entirety of the book's content on the subject. The approach to potatoes on the subject is both weirdly specific and somewhat dubious.

Hiding from the rain in the #allotmemt polytunnel.

It's a "shoulda stayed in bed" sorta day.

Slow start.

Brought the BBQ down the plot to slow smoke some beef rib, but it's also just not wanting to bother either. You'n'me mate, I feel you.

Have strimmed some of the overgrowth at the back of the shed plot, and the front and a path up the side of the new plot. Then ran outta battery, need to bring more batteries home from the pub cellar.

The inherited #allotmemt raspberries from earlier today got turned into a sauce, with a few left over as garnish, making for a raspberry sauced vanilla ice cream dessert.

The Brinjal Ajvar is a long time favourite of mine. Unfortunately Western Australia is a bit far to travel to to pick up some jars of preserved eggplant. Sure, I'd much rather go "home"(ish, kinda) than make my own, but beggars can't be choosers.

This uses skinny "Hansel" eggplants (mum's uses chunky chopped normal ones), plus Madre Vieja, Aji Mango, Orange Drop, and Serrano chillies, and garlic — all from our #allotmemt.

Made 7-ish small jars, but hid the 7th as it messed up the nice triangle.

I wish I had more time to do things with all this #allotmemt bounty. Something a little more interesting than passata!

Right now we are making a lot of passata and eating lots of tomato based pasta dishes. And that's nothing to complain about really. In an ideal world I could spend the rest of the day doing something useful with our harvest, but this is not that world and I should have headed to "work" already (the rod I made for my own back.)

I try to hang onto hope for better future times.

Exciting delivery day!!

Gonna #ferment or otherwise #preserve ALL THE THINGS from the #allotmemt (well, as much as time permits, we shall see... maybe mostly passata 😅)

This is a shipment of Weck jars from Germany (there's another layer in the box).

Oh, yeah, to complete yesterday's passata thread... pushed the red passata through the food mill today and jarred it all up.

We have 2430g of #allotmemt tomato passata packaged in total, with 541g of that being the Golden Crown yellow cherry tomato passata. Guess it's time to go harvest more tomatoes.
