Katie Webster, The Swamp Boogie Queen, 1988 on Alligator Records

Webster started out as a session musician behind lots of Louisiana artists but then came back as a solo artist in the 1980s. This was her first album as a leader with distribution in the US on Alligator Records.

Guests include The Memphis Horns, Kim Wilson, Robert Cray, and Bonnie Raitt. Great album.

My copy is the 2025 Vinyl Me Please reissue cut by Ryan Smith at Sterling and pressed at GZ Media.

Blues traditionalist Tinsley Ellis continues to put out great records, this time (once again) on Alligator Records. This one is all originals, recorded at the Rock House in Nashville and produced by studio ower Kevin McKendree who also plays organ and piano.

Tinsley Ellis, Naked Truth, 2024 on Alligator Records

Tinsley Ellis has put out over 20 albums between 1982 and 2024, including more than a dozen on Chicago’s Alligator Records, one of my favorite blues labels (founded in 1971).

This, his latest, Includes “Grown Ass Man” (which I think should probably be “grown-ass man” since it’s really a compound adjective, isn’t it?) as well as covers of Son House, Willie Dixon, and Leo Kottke. Great contemporary takes on traditional blues.

Picked up this signed copy on gold vinyl directly from the artist at a show at the Shalin LIu in Rockport MA.

Hound Dog Taylor and the House Rockers, Natural Boogie, 1974 on Alligator Records

Second record from Hound Dog Taylor and his band, originally issued as AL 4704. The band her includes Ted Harvey on drums and Brewer Phillips on 2nd guitar, with Hound Dog Taylor on lead guitar and vocals. (Their debut LP had been the first release on newly-formed Alligator in 1971).

Great electrified Chicago blues. Unfortunately Taylor died in 1975 so the band’s recorded output is limited, but this one plus the debut are well worth picking up if you get a chance.

My copy is the 2023 Vinyl Me Please Reissue, C076 in the Vinyl Me Please Classics Series, with listening notes by Andrew Winistorfer and lacquers cut by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound
