I didn't expect to care this much about a socially anxious security unit that just wants to be left alone to watch soap operas.

And yet, here we are.

All Systems Red works because Murderbot's voice is always on point. It's sharp, defensive, and consistently funny without turning into a joke machine. The pacing is tight, the plot does exactly what it needs to do, and the emotional beats sneak up on you when you're not paying attention.

This isn't some deep dive into the backstories of the supporting cast and it's not trying to be. The focus stays right where it should. On an AI that hates humans, hates vulnerability, and somehow ends up being deeply relatable anyway.
It's short, sweet, and way more effective than you'd expect.

October Reading Radar For Analogue Worlds In Portland, Oregon

The weather is cooling, and I am turning to my bookshelves to keep me warm. There are a few upcoming releases I am excited for, but the majority of my anticipated book releases are being paired with a book tour that stops through Portland, so you can find those recommendations towards the end of this article. For Portland, it is a busy month of book events for Analogue Worlds. When I use the term "Analogue Worlds," this is short-hand for naming the genres of books that are worlds separate […]

Read the first of Martha Well's Murderbot books, "All Systems Red" in which a security drone rescues it's crew from violence and death on the planet they're exploring.

The robot seems barely distinguished from the cyborgs and the humans really. Certainly organic parts, autonomy, inner life. Seems to not particularly like the humans but also seems to be pretty much like one.

Seemed short, like the first episode of a show rather than the whole series. Which I suppose I should have expected if I'd noticed it was a novella. There is indeed a whole series of them. Given I bought 'em in a bundle expect I'll read more.

Just started reading All Systems Red, and I'm loving it so far. I didn’t expect sci-fi to feel this personal, quiet, and strangely intimate. Definitely my kind of future.

This was a fun watch. If you enjoy the book(s,) you'll almost certainly enjoy it as season one basically covers the events of "All Systems Red," with a few interesting tweaks. I think the casting, and the overall "feel" and "vibe" were pretty spot-on. πŸ‘

Just watched the season finale of #Murderbot and I am a lachrymose jelly, a sobbing pudding of tears.

arghhhhh

I didn't think the show would make me cry as much as the books.

I was wrong.

Cory Albrecht's review of All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries, #1)

4/5: The sardonic, dry, and funny observations of a SecUnit who has "gone rogue" by hacking and disabling its governor module and just wants to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas.
