All India Radio’s French Program is back to 9620 kHz

All India Radio (recently aka Akashvani) has left 11710 kHz after less than a month. According to their A25 schedule as republished by the Indian DX Club International IDCI (see page 15 there), it is 9620 kHz again, and they were indeed booming in here in northwestern Germany last night. This month’s IDCI magazine also includes a story I wasn’t aware of, about Walter Kaufmann (1907 – 1984), a German who lived in Indian exile during the nazi years (page 7). He was a composer and actually composed All India Radio’s signature tune – the one we still get to hear ahead of the French programs.

In his later years, Kaufmann became a U.S. citizen. He was Jewish, born in Karlovy Vary (German: Karlsbad), a spa city now in the Czech Republic.
