"Ali Akbar Khan (14 April 1922 – 18 June 2009) was an Indian Hindustani classical musician of the Maihar gharana, known for his virtuosity in playing the sarod. Trained as a classical musician and instrumentalist by his father, Allauddin Khan, he also composed numerous classical ragas and film scores. He established a music school in Calcutta in 1956, and the Ali Akbar College of Music in 1967, which moved with him to the United States and is now based in San Rafael, California, with a branch in Basel, Switzerland.
Khan was instrumental in popularizing Indian classical music in the West, both as a performer and as a teacher. He first came to America in 1955 on the invitation of violinist Yehudi Menuhin and later settled in California." - Wikipedia
Daily #SteveKimock. When he first arrived in California he lived across from the #AliAkbarKhan College. He was always enamored of #HindustaniClassical music, and would often sit out and listen to whatever music emanating from the college.

Forgot to honor the 101st anniversary of the birth of #AliAkbarKhan, the great master of #sarod. Westerners are probably most familiar with him from the great performance with #RaviShankar at the #ConcertForBangladesh. KhanSahib was a genius in his own right. I have been surprised to hear from several Indian musicians I know that they consider him superior to Ravi Shankar.

Growing up hearing #Hindustanimusic via #RaviShankar and #AliAkbarKhan I always had a passion for it, but already having learned #guitar #left-handed I really couldn’t find an instrument to learn on.
Then I discovered that there’s a tradition of #slideguitar in Indian music. An easy conversion to left-hand!
