Lo scheletro è stato rinvenuto nella navata di una chiesa moderna le cui origini risalgono almeno al XIII secolo, durante i lavori di restauro a seguito di un parziale crollo del pavimento avvenuto a febbraio, ha spiegato L1 Nieuws, media della provincia del Limburgo.
La figura storica dietro il mito
Charles de Batz de Castelmore, detto d'Artagnan, il famoso moschettiere dei re Luigi XIII e Luigi XIV, originario di Lupiac (Gers), trascorse la sua vita al servizio della corona francese. Questo gentiluomo guascone ispirò l'eroe de "I tre moschettieri" di Alexandre Dumas nel XIX secolo, un personaggio ora famoso in tutto il mondo grazie al romanzo e ai numerosi adattamenti cinematografici.
Analisi del Dna sui resti ritrovati
Durante l'assedio di Maastricht del 1673, il moschettiere fu ucciso, probabilmente da una palla di moschetto. Il suo luogo di sepoltura è rimasto un mistero da allora. Una moneta francese è stata ritrovata vicino allo scheletro a Maastricht, secondo quanto riferito dal diacono Jos Valke, presente durante gli scavi iniziali.
"Inoltre, la posizione della tomba indica che si trattava di una persona importante: lo scheletro è stato trovato dove un tempo sorgeva l'altare, e all'epoca solo i membri della famiglia reale o altre figure di spicco venivano sepolti sotto un altare", ha dichiarato il diacono a L1 Nieuws.
Lo scheletro è stato rimosso dalla chiesa e si trova ora in un istituto archeologico a Deventer (Germania orientale), secondo quanto riportato dal media. Un campione di Dna è stato prelevato dallo scheletro il 13 marzo ed è attualmente in fase di analisi presso un laboratorio di Monaco.
Per Wim Dijkman, l'archeologo che da 28 anni è alla ricerca dei resti di D'Artagnan, una simile scoperta potrebbe rappresentare il culmine della sua carriera. "Sono sempre molto cauto, sono uno scienziato. Ma nutro grandi aspettative", ha commentato a L1 Nieuws.

Analysis of DNA from the remains found
The musketeer was killed during the siege of Maastricht in 1673, probably by a musket ball. His place of burial has been a mystery ever since. A French coin was found near the skeleton in Maastricht, according to deacon Jos Valke, who was present during the initial excavations.
“Furthermore, the location of the tomb indicates that it was a person of importance: the skeleton was found where the altar once stood, and at that time only members of the royal family or other prominent figures were buried under an altar,” the deacon told L1 Nieuws.
The skeleton has been removed from the church and is now located in an archaeological institute in Deventer (eastern Germany), according to the media. A DNA sample was taken from the skeleton on March 13th and is currently being analyzed in a laboratory in Munich.
For Wim Dijkman, the archaeologist who has been searching for D’Artagnan’s remains for 28 years, such a discovery could represent the culmination of his career. “I am always very cautious; I am a scientist. But I have great expectations,” he commented to L1 Nieuws.
