My go-to tests for any startup doing AI detection on text are my own master's thesis (2011), a random chapter from The Hobbit, and a new text generated by a local Olama. So far, no detector has reliably detected all three of them correctly.
Interestingly, the biggest problem seems to be detecting that Tolkien certainly did not use AI to write The Hobbit.

News Summary: Kobo CEO Reveals 45% of Self-Published Submissions Rejected for Suspected AI Content

I missed this story when it first came out a fortnight ago (I think because the title of the article by Rakuten Kobo's Russ Tamblyn is decidedly oblique, so I just moved on). Fortunately the substantive content has generated several more helpfully titled spinout columns since then, so I'm circling back to the original. A single sentence is at the heart of this piece, and it contains a figure that provides additional context for much of the recent debate over AI-generated content. Tamblyn is speaking in his capacity as president and CEO at Rakuten Kobo.

This link goes to a gift article. “Humanizers rewrite A.I.-produced text to make it sound less robotic, formulaic and trite. Autotypers slowly drip words and sentences into documents, making it appear as if papers were typed at a human pace when in fact, they were produced by A.I. They even fabricate typos, […]

Deezer just turned on a free AI-music detector. Why: nearly half of new uploads are AI, around 75,000 tracks a day. Most plays get flagged as fraud.

Google's Veo 3 was the first frontier video model to ship synced sound. ElevenLabs is now valued at $11B and pledged $1B in free voice-restoration tech for people who have lost their voice.

The machines are turning up everywhere. So is the detection.
