Too hot to harvest: Rising heat threatens farm labor and food security

Imagine a farm in 2050. It's summer and solar radiation and humidity are peaking. Fruit picking machines hum and cooling mist sprays overhead. In the haze, a robot stands among the rows of fruit. It scans two strawberries—one red and ripe, the other still green. It hovers, hesitates, then makes its pick.

"Monterey County Agriculture is a $4.3 billion-dollar economic sector that depends on 55,000 farmworkers to harvest our crops each year, primarily immigrants; some have resided in our communities for decades.
Our nation’s fresh food supply and local economy are fully dependent on this workforce, and we consider this a #NationalSecurity priority in a time of agricultural labor shortages.” —#MontereyCounty Farm Bureau https://montereycfb.com/immigration-resources/

Ascott Martyrs - Wikipedia

May 20th 1873

On 20 May 1873, 16 women from Ascott-under-Wychwood in Oxfordshire, England, were sent to prison for their role in forming the Agricultural Workers' Union and became known as the Ascott martyrs. Local farm workers had joined the union, so the landowner sacked them and instead hired workers from the nearby village of Ramsden.
