Olnes Pond Campground Reopens as Repair Work Continues on the #HimalayaRoadFire and #AggieCreekFire

BY ALASKA FIRE PIOS on AUGUST 4, 2025

“…Highlights: Alaska State Parks has reopened the Olnes Pond Campground to the public after being temporarily closed. The closure was necessary to accommodate firefighting crews who were using the location as a camp while working on the Himalaya Road and Aggie Creek fires. With fire activity in both areas now moderated, the crews have been able to shift their focus from active firefighting to suppression repair, and the campground is now available for public use again.

Operations: Work continues on the extensive fire suppression repair for the Himalaya Road Fire, with a focus on the Caribou Creek area. Multiple excavators are methodically restoring dozer lines, a process that is expected to take a considerable amount of time due to the significant amount of ground to cover. On the Aggie Creek Fire, the fire is currently in patrol status, with crews scouting for areas that may need repair…”

#HimalayaRoadFire Repair Continues as the Fires Consolidate Resources

BY 2025HIMALAYAROADFIRE on AUGUST 3, 2025

“…Work continues on the extensive fire suppression repair for the Himalaya Road Fire. The repair work will be focused on the Caribou Creek area, with multiple excavators methodically restoring dozer lines. Given the significant amount of ground to cover, this process will take a considerable amount of time. The heavy equipment will progress across the fire area, eventually concluding its work along Glacier Creek near the Elliot Highway. The total distance of dozer lines requiring repair is estimated to be between 35 and 40 miles, highlighting the long-term commitment to restoring the affected landscape…

TFR over #HimalayaRoadFirr and #AggieCreekFire has been cancelled

BY 2025HIMALAYAROADFIRE on AUGUST 2, 2025

“…The air space over the fires is no longer restricted. There is no longer a need for aviation support. The Unmanned Areial System (drone) has been released. Aggie Creek Fire is in patrol status as potential for repair is being scouted. Repair work continues on the Himalaya Road Fire focused primarily in the Caribou Creek area on the eastern portion of the fire. The repair group, made up of six excavators and one dozer, will work their way across the fire area restoring dozer lines and other damage from suppression efforts ending up along Glacier Creek near the Elliot Highway. There is 35 to 40 miles of dozer line to be repaired…”

Backhaul complete on #HimalayaRoadFire and #AggieCreekFire, suppression repair underway

BY 2025HIMALAYAROADFIRE on AUGUST 1, 2025

“…Operations: All the excess supplies and equipment have been removed from the firelines making way for suppression repair that is well underway. Two more excavators arrived Thursday and joined two others working in the Caribou Creek area where they are repairing 13 miles of dozer line. Repair involves pulling the duff mat back onto the bladed line and scattering trees and brush over the area to slow erosion. Water bars are being constructed on sloped areas to divert runoff. Areas of permafrost will need to be left until the ground freezes, so heavy equipment does not cause further damage…”

Fire Crews Adjust to Muddy Conditions, Focus on Long-Term Repair on the #HimalayaRoadFire and #AggieCreekFire

BY 2025HIMALAYAROADFIRE on JULY 31, 2025

“Operations: Due to challenging weather and muddy road conditions, fire suppression activities were impacted yesterday, and operators had to withdraw from certain areas. Despite this, suppression efforts are continuing, with a shifted strategy that utilizes more heavy equipment and fewer crews.

Fire suppression repair is actively underway for the parts of the fireline not located in permafrost areas. However, repairing the permafrost layers is a long-term plan because the ground needs time to heal. When a wildfire burns away the protective soil layer, the frozen ground underneath thaws and becomes an unstable mess. Trying to fix things with heavy machinery on this soft ground is not only dangerous but can also cause severe erosion and release climate-warming gases. Instead, crews will wait for the winter when the ground refreezes and becomes hard. This will allow them to safely access the area and complete the necessary repairs without causing further damage, ensuring a more effective and lasting recovery for the landscape.”

Suppression Repair Underway as Rain continues to moderate #HimalayaRoadFire and #AggieCreekFire

BY ALASKA DIVISION OF FORESTRY & FIRE PROTECTION on JULY 30, 2025

“…Highlights: Due to persistent rainfall, fire activity across both the Himalaya Road and Aggie Creek Fire is being significantly dampened. This has led to crews being strategically pulled back from certain areas as wet and unsafe conditions are present on dozer lines and access roads. While heavy equipment movement and full backhaul operations are currently being restricted by wet and impassable roads, safety remains the priority. On the Himalaya Road Fire, an assessment was completed yesterday to determine rehabilitation needs, and berms are being dismantled by the San Juan Hotshots as part of ongoing suppression repair efforts…”

Whitefish Campground reopens to public, rain reduces fire activity across #HimalayaRoadFire and #AggieCreekFire

BY 2025HIMALAYAROADFIRE on JULY 29, 2025

“The Alaska State Parks Whitefish Campground is now reopened to the public for recreation due to moderated fire weather and the rightsizing and consolidation of incident resources. Containment increased on the Himalaya Road Fire (#223) to 50% as the fire perimeter held during the hot and dry temperatures seen throughout the weekend. Additionally, the Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) has been altered. The affected airspace has decreased and has now split into two separate TFRs to cover the Himalaya Road Fire and the Aggie Creek Fire separately.”

Despite visible smoke yesterday, fire activity remains minimal on #AggieCreekFire and #HimalayaRoadFire

BY 2025HIMALAYAROADFIRE on JULY 28, 2025

“Warm and dry conditions throughout the weekend saw an increase of smoke from the Aggie Creek Fire (#243), however, all smoke and heat were located to be coming from the interior of the fire perimeter, surrounded by hardwood fuel types, and is not threatening any infrastructure. Firefighters on the Himalaya Road Fire (#223) worked together with excavators to continue to dig through berms looking for residual hot spots. The previously contained section of the Himalaya Road Fire was confirmed to have successfully held the fire throughout the warm weather this past weekend. The Whitefish and Olnes Campgrounds are still closed to the public…”
