It’s not just about how many children people have, but when. If young couples are delaying having children until they’re in their 30s, & their children do the same, that also slows population growth. My silent generation in-laws, in their 90s, have young adult great grandchildren & could potentially see the arrival of great great grandchildren.

I’m in my 60s & still waiting to see if I’ll become a grandmother. If I do, & they wait until they’re in their 30s to have children, I could be in my late 90s before a great grandchild would be born. I’m not sure I want to live that long.

And this is happening because young people have to spend years & go into debt to finish their education, & can’t afford to set themselves up with homes in which to raise families.
