2025 feierte der finnische Musiker und Komponist JIMI TENOR seinen 60. Geburtstag. Er hätte sich keinen passenderen Ort dafür vorstellen können als die Bühne, und so kam Tenor im Frühjahr 2025 mit seiner Band nach Hamburg, nicht nur um sein persönliches Jubiläum zu feiern, sondern auch um neue Musik aufzunehmen. Teils mit dem Hamburger Produzenten Tobias Levin in dessen Electric Avenue Studio, teils im Kiikala Center of the Universe Studio Complex von Lauri Kallio, entstand das erste Album der Jimi Tenor Band: „Selenites, Selenites!“.
Tenor kann auf zahlreiche Kollaborationen zurückblicken, unter anderem mit Tony Allen, dem UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, Kabukabu und Freestyle Man. Nachdem er in den 1990er-Jahren mit seiner eigenwilligen Fusion aus Lounge-Jazz und Acid Techno auf Sähko und Warp Records große Aufmerksamkeit erregt hatte, wandte er sich in den folgenden Jahren zunehmend der afrikanischen Musik zu. Doch für den Multiinstrumentalisten gibt es keine Genregrenzen – er kombiniert mühelos eine breite Palette von Stilen, von Electronica und Afrobeat bis hin zu Spiritual Jazz, mit seiner unverwechselbaren musikalischen Handschrift, um ein einzigartiges Musikerlebnis zu schaffen.
„Selenites, Selenites!“ ist ein beeindruckendes Debütalbum, das eine Gruppe virtuoser Musiker präsentiert, die mit absoluter Spielfreude neue Klangwelten erkunden. Es ist kein gewöhnliches Afro-Jazz-Album, sondern eine außergewöhnliche Reise in einen unverfälschten, rohen Sound – so als stünde man direkt vor der Bühne - wie an diesem Tag bei uns im KOHI!
