Dengue Dengue Dengue - Zenit & Nadir

“Dengue Dengue Dengue continue expanding their carefully created aesthetic on their new album ‘Zenit & Nadir’ by diving into the deep and rich musical history of Afro-Peruvian music, already hinted in the first single ‘Ágni’, which is the inversion of the traditional Afro-Peruvian rhythm Ingá. The ongoing exploration of the vast and rich musical heritage of the descendants of the former African slaves in Peru has become the main focus of their new album.”

Dengue Dengue Dengue

This powerful, short fiction film recreates events that took place in #Peru in the early 1800s, when a group of #cimarrones — runaway #slaves —attacked a caravan to free friends who’d been sentenced to death.
Several of Peru’s vanguard artists of the early 1980s participated in the making of this film. The #AfroPeruvian leader is played by Amador Ballumbrosio, the elder patriarch of the legendary Ballumbrosio family, and the script was co-written by Enrique Verástegui, the iconic #Peruvian poet (of African and Chinese descent) who founded the Movimiento Hora Cero. The film’s music was composed by Carlos Hayre, the great Peruvian musicologist who introduced the use of the cajón (box drum) in creole waltzes and Andean harmonies in modern jazz and bossa nova arrangements.

#HKW has another one of their relaxed #OpenAir concerts from the #SonicPluriverse series coming up at 7pm. Ticket prices are relatively moderate, 23 Euros for 2 bands, playing from 7-10pm. All followed by a DJ set that's free.

Tonight it's an interesting line-up: #Novalima are mixing #AfroPeruvian traditions & #eletronic #music. 2nd act #TheDholFoundation is combining #Sikh #dhol drums with sounds from elsewhere & #bhangra.

Africa: Novalima Leads the Dance With Ramón Perez Prieto: [Afropop] Since its official founding in 2001, the band Novalima has championed a driving, tuneful electronic and, at times, hard-rocking expression of Afro-Peruvian music. After the release of their third album, Coba Coba in 2008, they began touring the world, winning awards and accolades at home and abroad.
