Final push for translations

The African Translation Project is reaching the end of its fundraising push. As of now, donations cover 71% of the cost of translating two books: Bengithi Lizokuna (I thought it was going to rain) by Nakanjani G. Sibiya, translated from isiZulu by Sifiso Mzobe and Zvinobvinza (The Crocodile Doesn’t Hunt) by Pauline Chirata-Mukondiwa, translated from Shona by Zukiswa Wanner.

If you think the world needs more translated fiction—particularly from underrepresented authors, places, and languages—and have a few bucks to spare, please do check out their Ko-fi page and consider a donation.

The African Translation Project

Cool fundraiser alert! The African Translation Project aims to provide translations of books written in non-colonial African languages. South African author, editor, and journalist Zukiswa Wanner will curate the collection.

The overall goal is $15,000, which will fund three translations (one each in isiZulu, Shona, and Kiswahili). At $2,500, Sifiso Mzobe will begin translating a novel by Nakanjani G. Sibiya.

Are these names new to you? They’re new to me. Reading, writing, and generally existing exclusively in English is a privilege, but I am very conscious of all the interesting work that is completely inaccessible to me because I am functionally monolingual. Translation is an incredibly cool undertaking. Writers in different languages deserve a bigger audience. And I would like the chance to read more books!

As a bonus, folks who donate $5 or more can get a little treat: a piece of art or writing on one of several themes. My microfiction story “Attack of the Crab Monsters, dir. Roger Corman” is one of the options. Thanks to Emily Bell, doing stuff behind the scenes, like mentioning a project on Discord so I can get her a piece and see it up in a timeframe to rival a rejection from The Dark. (For you non-horror authors, that’s really fast.)
