The Nommo are primordial ancestor spirits in the mythology of the Dogon people of Mali, Africa. The Nommo are said to be hermaphroditic, amphibious, fish-like people who came from the sky to bring great knowledge. Modern myths have the Nommo coming from a planet orbiting the star Sirius.

It's the Day of Selene / Luna's Day / #Monday! 🌛

The dual deity Mawu-Lisa came to the #Fon pantheon from the Aja people. In the dual Mawu-Lisa, #Mawu is female and Lisa male. Their union is regarded as the basis of the universal order. The Fon identify Mawu with the #moon, night, fertility, motherhood, gentleness, forgiveness, rest, and joy while Lisa is the sun. They are the parents of #Hevioso, God of Thunder.

Rabbit is a prominent trickster in many African legends. He can be surprisingly predatory, like when Leopard discovers Rabbit is eating Leopard's babies. This appears in African-American legends too, where Br'er Rabbit is a predator like his nemesis Br'er Fox.

My first review for Children's Books Ireland. I really enjoyed Adia Kelbara and the Circle of Shamans by Isi Hendrix. This was a really good introduction to #AfricanMythology

Adia Kelbara and the Circle of Shamans | Childrens Books Ireland

Isi Hendrix’s first novel of her African-fantasy trilogy tells the story of Adia Kelbara – a twelve-year-old girl who discovers she has mysterious powers which she struggles to control. When she gains a place as an intern in the kitchen of the Academy of Shamans, she hopes someone there might be able to help her, but the school is not at all what she had expected …

@[email protected] @AimeeMaroux Oh I love this story! Morningstar is first wife of the moon, Eveningstar is second wife. Two faces of the same Goddess, Venus! Both asterian aspects give life to splendors & in a Pandora’s box twist, the moon is to blame for letting all of the dangerous creatures into the world! #creationmyth #africanmythology #mythology
Another African cryptid, this one from the Congo. The Emela-Ntouka, or "Killer of Elephants," is a large saurian with a single ivory horn protruding from its snout. The creature is said to be related to the Triceratops but has lost its frill and other horns. Floppy ears are also frequently described.. #art #creaturedesign #creature #monster #cryptid #cryptids #africancrpytids #africanfolklore #africa #africanmythology #emelantouka

Instead, I thought I'd have some fun and design another African cryptid that will feature briefly in the next storyline.

The Ninki Nanka is a swamp creature from West African folklore, described as a roughly 30-foot-long wingless dragon with a long neck and an equine head with three horns. #art #creaturedesign #africanfolklore #africa #africanmythology #cryptid #africancryptids #ninkinanka #art

The Grootslang is a creature from the mythology of South Africa. #art #creaturedesign #grootslang #elephant #snake #southafrica #africa #africanmythology #creature #monster #hybrid #cryptid According to the legend, the gods who made all things made a mistake in creating this creature - giving it incredible strength, cunning, and intellect. Realizing what they had done, they split the animal into two separate ones - elephants and snakes.
