19 soccer fans sentenced to jail in Morocco over Africa Cup hooliganism

A Moroccan court has sentenced 19 soccer fans to up to a year in prison on charges of hooliganism stemming from a chaotic Africa Cup of Nations final that saw supporters try to storm the field. After a hearing that lasted more than five hours, the presiding judge ruled that the fans — 18 Senegalese and a French national — were guilty of more than half a dozen charges, including damaging sporting facilities and committing violence during a sporting event. Lawyer Naima El Guellaf tells The Associated Press that 11 people were sentenced to one year in prison and handed a $550 fine. Four people were sentenced to six months and given a $218 fine. Organizers say 2027 Africa Cup will take place as planned in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya

The president of the Confederation of African Football says the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will go ahead as originally planned in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. Patrice Motsepe says the tournament will be played in June and/or July and that the organization will be announcing exact dates soon. Motsepe also addressed Morocco’s hosting of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations next month, saying it will go ahead as planned from March 17 to April 3. There had been reports that Morocco wanted to withdraw from hosting the tournament for the third time straight after South Africa offered to take over.
