Mother hires Paul Hutchison to develop media offering

Paul Hutchison, the former UK chief executive of Wavemaker, has joined Mother as head of media.

In a new role for the creative agency, Hutchison will be responsible for shaping and leading its approach to media and communications planning, aiming to offer clients “a uniquely differentiated media proposition in the UK market”.

The role has been created in response to client demand for a more integrated approach to advertising.

Katie Mackay-Sinclair, partner at Mother, said: “We’re sure that ‘Hutch’ will bring radical accountability to how we approach media, he has high standards and is primed to bring a bit of media rebelliousness to the UK market – for clients and for creativity, the need has never been greater.”

Hutchison was most recently chief executive of Bohemia, the Australian media arm of M&C Saatchi, and left to return to the UK in October.

Before Bohemia, from 2018 to 2022, he was UK CEO of Wavemaker, where he picked up clients including Nationwide, Eurostar, BMW/Mini and various government departments for the WPP agency. 

Hutchison moved over to Wavemaker when it was formed as a merger between Maxus and MEC, where he was chief operating officer. He was with MEC for more than five years.

Hutchison started his media career at Vizeum, and prior to that was a senior planner at creative agency DLKW.

Hutchison said: “I first met Mother when we worked on Coca-Cola together. Since then I’ve always been a massive fan of their approach of applying creativity to everything. With one of the strongest agency leadership teams anywhere in the world, time and again, they manage to bring something different and relevant to our industry. The opportunity to join the team, and to help to bring the Mother media vision to life in the UK and internationally is one I simply couldn’t resist.”
