while i did not pursue librarianship consciously for this reason, i often think about how i, an #adoptee who was raised on the principle that i had no right to seek to know certain things, chose a career devoted to giving everyone access to what they want to learn, *no questions asked.* 📚
For several years, I posted about #NAAM and #adoption each November from an #adoptee perspective on a platform that is clearly drowning in noise now. I might comment there, but I intend to be here. What I have to say about it will be uncomfortable for birth parents and adoptive parents. I won't be pulling punches, but I won't be deliberately harsh to them. I won't concede any sympathy to the adoption agencies, adoption lawyers, judges, legislators and other enablers and gaslighters who have abused adoptees for decades. I aim for civil discourse here, but I have boundaries. One of those boundaries is that no one, not anyone, gets to tell me or any other adoptee that we're wrong about what adoption really is. We're quite literally the only people who actually know.

Do you speak up about adoption online? If so what is it that you're attempting to share or teach other humans about adoption?

So often on mainstream social media, I see my fellow adoptees speaking out. I applaud them. I believe their experiences are 💯 valid no matter how they choose to present it, or whether I agree with them; however, in checking in with myself after reading their posts, I often feel a sense of negativity -- as though I'm walking away from a toxic exchange. I'm uncertain if this is merely social media somehow tainting their message, or if the individuals are simply so hurt by their experiences that the telling of them is a bit much, even for a fellow adoptee.

I wonder if any others are like me in that they believe it entirely possible to share negativity without requiring others to drink the same poison, in a sense??

Would love to see a discussion on this if anyone's open to it.

youtube served me an ad for “embark dog dna.” in the ad, a chihuahua-esque dog talks about undergoing an “identity crisis,” not knowing where he came from, until his “mom” got him his dna results identifying his mix of breeds. and thus the #adoptee / house pet analogy is complete.
my saturday nite soul confession is that i struggle to break a lifelong pattern in my attachments, projects and relationships: deep commitment & longing for connection, followed by withdrawal & “walking away.” i re-enact the trauma of my origin as an #adoptee, when my entire family walked away.
my niche opinion as an #adoptee is that the architects and champions of the 1997 Adoption and Safe Families Act can rot in hell

that twinge in your heart when you’re an #adoptee and a form asks you for the names of your mother and father and you have no choice but to play their game again
lrp: not germane to the many present crises, but (and in agreement): ask any #adoptee who was raised under the pretense that legal paper-shuffling could somehow swap out their natal parents whether the law is “real.” a world in which we need to supply fake birth records to get our “real id.”
IT SEEMED LIKE A BAD IDEA AT THE TIME, a show business memoir by the legendary comedy writer Bruce Vilanch. Absurd tales of Hollywood failures and triumphs, narrated with a disarming sweetness. And (personally of interest) he's an #adoptee.
