We navigate the world by these maps. Until the day the terrain outgrows them. Somewhere between linear logic and the edge of the…

The Future of AI: Thoughts at the End of 2024

I received this LinkedIn Direct Message this morning, and decided to answer it as today’s post.

“Hi Bob,
I'm curious about your thoughts on the next big thing in networking. With AI developing so quickly, we're moving from the Internet age to the AI age very fast. What do you think are the next big things that will be coming?”

My reply:
I'm not trying to be the crystal ball guy. As an older person in technology, I've been through a lot of revolutionary changes, and through that lens, I have some observations for you.

1) The predictions are seldom accurate. At best, some of the predictions are partially true.

2) The law of unintended consequences is as real as the law of gravity. Some of the unintended consequences of AI will be fantastic, and some will be sad.

3) The promises of AI, like other amazing technologies before it, will be exceeded.

4) The promises of AI, like other amazing technologies before it, will be unrealized.

5) With AI you can become rich, go bankrupt, or simply be a user.

To make the most of the Age of AI, you personally need to develop a different kind of AI: “Adaptive Intelligence.”

EXAMPLE
At the start of my post-military technology career, I was installing two-way radios in police cars. I haven’t done that in decades. And yet, today, I am in the same business I have always been in: information communications.

THE LESSON
If your career is just taking off in the Age of AI, don’t think that the skills you develop today will be sufficient to sustain your income for 30-40 years. Those skills will always be part of your foundation, but your skills must continue to be a developing arc.
