--<--
The protests that began in Iran last month have been suppressed with a level of state violence not seen since the 1980s, when the Islamic Republic executed thousands of leftists and other dissidents. In this episode, Adam Shatz talks to Chowra Makaremi and Amir Ahmadi Arian about the evolution of public dissent in Iran since 1979 and why the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ movement of 2022 opened the way to more overtly revolutionary protest.

They also discuss the economic collapse underpinning the most recent uprising and the ways in which the Iranian regime has refined the use of opacity and rumour to consolidate its power.

Chowra Makaremi is an anthropologist at the French National Centre for Scientific Research in Paris and Amir Ahmadi Arian is a novelist and assistant professor at Binghamton University, New York.

"Throughout my stay in Berlin, I kept hearing from Germans quietly critical of #Israel that ‘cracks’ had begun to appear in #Staatsräson. These cracks sometimes assumed unsettling forms, notably a relief at shedding the burden of Holocaust memory, as if #Palestine was an invitation to bury the Holocaust, at last, rather than to apply its lessons to the destruction of #Gaza." - #AdamShatz

Author Adam Shatz on ‘The World since October 7’ (II)

from #WorldOutlook
July 19, 2025

In this essay, author #AdamShatz raises important issues that deserve further discussion in light of the gruesome Oct. 7 attack led by #Hamas that targeted civilians in #Israel, the genocidal war Israel unleashed in retaliation on the entire population of #Gaza, and a new wave of violence by the Israel Defense Forces (#IDF) and #Zionist settlers against #Palestinians in the #WestBank. Shatz also examines political developments in the #Mideast and beyond after the recent #US-#Israeli war on #Iran. He spells out the implications of last year’s Israeli invasion of #Lebanon, which decimated the Iranian-backed #Hezbollah and caused a substantial death toll among the broader civilian Lebanese population, and of the overthrow of the Assad dictatorship in #Syria. This is the second of two parts.

"The war with #Iran is far more than an attempt to prevent nuclear weapons from getting in the hands of mullahs (if it even is that); it is the culmination of #Israel’s effort to restore its image of invincibility, which 7 October shattered, to settle scores with its enemies and to make itself the master of the region." - #AdamShatz
