Adam O'Farrill | the PROPAGANDA site

Jazz musician Adam O'Farrill is a trumpet player, composer, and bandleader, whose music takes a modernist approach with a bit of post-classical chamber edge in the way he forges an intimate sound. His pieces are melodically rich, though generously sprinkled with dissonance, and they are fairly subtle and textured. There is a strong resonant quality and clarity to his playing, no doubt enhanced both by his overall technical mastery over his instrument and the sense of space he creates with his arrangements that allow breathing room for the members of his ensemble. It may be challenging music for the uninitiated in some ways, but it more than makes up for it with his captivating sound and those hooks that slowly sink in.

“Common denominators are always there, no matter the style or tradition. If you put on the radio, what makes you move your head or tap your foot to what you hear? I feel those are the elements that we can all connect to. Since I was a kid, I have been fascinated with that idea. I think instinctual elements, groove, and rhythm are all very embedded in all of us. I call those elements common denominators from all styles of music, and they can bridge any gap. They are what make us react to music regardless of the style. I often try to find those elements that could connect all different styles and put them all together into one piece.”- Patricia Brennan

Finding the Common Denominators: A Conversation with Patricia Brennan on ‘Breaking Stretch’ - PostGenre

Often, one of the first things a young child learns about a band is that it divides into sections. Horns lead the melodies and craft harmonies, while percussion and bass provide a rhythmic backdrop. However, this segregation of instrumental voices relies on a deeply flawed premise built upon oversimplification. Is a tongue hitting a reed

Review: Mary Halvorson’s ‘Cloudward’ - PostGenre

Mary Halvorson gives a wide range of effects and musical roles to her guitar, and the result is always idiosyncratic. The guitarist's compositions have a complex, innovative edge, and Cloudward (Nonesuch, 2024) is more evidence as to why she deserves all the acclaim that comes her way. The intensity and progression of "Desiderata" is a fantastic display

The Philosopher G.K. Chesterton once commented, "There are no rules of architecture for a castle in the clouds." Here on the ground, architects must follow rigid rules and principles to ensure the sturdy erection of their vision and avoid collapse. But what happens when you work in a place where it is safe for some

Shimmer Wince: A Conversation with Anna Webber on Just Intonation - PostGenre

It is common for musicians to incorporate recent discoveries - whether the adoption of cutting-edge technology or novel compositional processes - into their works to present a new sound. Far less discussed, however, are cases where artists revisit old conceptions to see how they can forge previously uncharted paths. Anna Webber's explorations of just intonation
