"Quand, dans la société primitive, l'économique se laisse repérer comme champ autonome et défini, quand l’activité de production devient travail aliéné, comptabilisé et imposé par ceux qui vont jouir des fruits de ce travail, c’est que la société n’est plus primitive, c’est qu’elle est devenue une société divisée en dominants et dominés, en maîtres et sujets, c’est qu’elle a cessé d’exorciser ce qui est destiné à la tuer : le pouvoir et le respect du pouvoir. La division majeure de la société, celle qui fonde toutes les autres, y compris sans doute la division du travail, c’est la nouvelle disposition verticale entre la base et le sommet, c’est la grande coupure politique entre détenteurs de la force, qu’elle soit guerrière ou religieuse, et assujettis à cette force. La relation politique de pouvoir précède et fonde la relation économique d’exploitation. Avant d’être économique, l’aliénation est politique, le pouvoir est avant le travail, l’économique est une dérive du politique, l’émergence de l’État détermine l’apparition des classes." P. C.

Résumé:
L'existence de sociétés sans État est établie depuis les récits des premiers explorateurs du Nouveau Monde. On a cru reconnaître dans ces sociétés une organisation "non" ou "pré"-politique. Dans La Société contre l'État, Pierre Clastres conteste cette assimilation du politique à l'étatique : il montre que le pouvoir politique ne revêt pas nécessairement la forme coercitive de l'État et il se propose d'en redéfinir le champ.

Comment naît l'État? En s'appuyant sur sa connaissance des Indiens d'Amérique, Clastres avance l'hypothèse que la dérive d'une société vers la hiérarchisation étatique suscite une réaction défensive de nature religieuse. Paradoxalement, le pouvoir étatique serait établi par la parole des prophètes qui s'élèvent contre la montée des chefs. Ainsi s'expliquerait l'origine religieuse de la plupart des grands États.

Pierre Clastres (1934-1977)
est un anthropologue et ethnologue français.

Philosophe de formation, il s'est intéressé à l'anthropologie américaniste sous l'influence de Claude Lévi-Strauss et d'Alfred Métraux. Il place d'emblée son œuvre dans le sillage du Discours de la servitude volontaire d'Étienne de La Boétie dont il se réclame.

Pierre Clastres a effectué de nombreux travaux de terrain. Il passe l'année 1963 auprès des indiens Guayaki au Paraguay. En 1965, il est en mission chez les Guarani, de nouveau au Paraguay. Il se rend à deux reprise chez les Chulupi en 1966 puis 1968. Il effectue en 1970 un court séjour chez les Yanomami avec son collègue Jacques Lizot. Enfin, il séjourne brièvement en 1974 chez les Guarani du Brésil.
En 1974, il est chercheur au CNRS, et publie le recueil d'articles La société contre l'État.
En 1975, il est directeur d'études à la cinquième section de l'Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes.
En 1977, il meurt prématurément dans un accident de la route laissant son œuvre inachevée et éparpillée.

Summary:
The existence of stateless societies has been established since the accounts of the first explorers of the New World. These societies were believed to be "non-political" or "pre-political" in nature. In Society Against the State, Pierre Clastres challenges this assimilation of the political with the state: he shows that political power does not necessarily take the coercive form of the state and proposes to redefine its scope.

How does the state come into being? Drawing on his knowledge of Native Americans, Clastres puts forward the hypothesis that a society's drift toward state hierarchy provokes a defensive reaction of a religious nature. Paradoxically, state power is established by the words of prophets who rise up against the rise of leaders. This would explain the religious origins of most large states.

Pierre Clastres (1934-1977)
was a French anthropologist and ethnologist.

Trained as a philosopher, he became interested in American anthropology under the influence of Claude Lévi-Strauss and Alfred Métraux. He placed his work in the wake of Étienne de La Boétie's Discourse on Voluntary Servitude, to which he referred.

Pierre Clastres carried out extensive fieldwork. He spent 1963 with the Guayaki Indians in Paraguay. In 1965, he was on a mission with the Guarani, again in Paraguay. He visited the Chulupi twice, in 1966 and 1968. In 1970, he spent a short time with the Yanomami with his colleague Jacques Lizot. Finally, in 1974, he stayed briefly with the Guarani of Brazil.
