What is an acoustic neuroma?🔥🔥🔥#acousticneuroma

5 years ago (3/15/18) I was coming out of a 7 hour brain surgery. BRAIN SURGERY! I can hardly believe those words myself. I had my 1st stroke a little over a month later, followed by another in August. Still not over those. They were able to remove a large portion of the tumor. In late ‘21 what was left had grown, so I had radiation. Another MRI next month. I am VERY lucky & blessed to be here.

Day 28 of 28 under the linear accelerator for stereotactic radiosurgery for a recurring brain tumor that pops up every few years to try and kill me.

I feel bad at this point, functioning, but strange, fatigued, dizzy, and clumsy.

I'll know in March if I'm cured.

Please feel free to reach out if you're in for a #craniotomy or three, or have a #schwannoma or #AcousticNeuroma, or if you need the support of someone who has survived some hard life lessons.

To a better 2023!

I have current research in #CochlearImplant, #TBI, #NoiseInduced #HearingLoss in an #ovine model, #Encephalocele repair, and otic organoids, and I have recent publications in #Stapedectomy/ #Stapedotomy, #VestibularSchwannoma/ #AcousticNeuroma, #LabyrinthitisOssificans, #Tympanoplasty, #COVID, and #ResidentEducation. I’ve been known to do my own #MedicalIllustration and stats for publications, too. 2/3

Since my #BrainTumor surgery, I have to deal with some oddities. When fatigued, I have two distinct symptoms.
First, the left side of my face begins to droop. It's very noticable, as my face loses semmetry. The left side is lower than my right, especially my eye.
The second is my vision. When I'm well rested, I can see both near and far without much issue. But when I'm tired, everything is much more blurry. It gets worse as I age.

By way of #introduction I’m a #sciencewriter interested in topics in #science and #scicomm. These days I write for #StJude #StJudeResearch about all kinds of things but mostly #Biology and #Health. I never shut up about my two #rescuedogs and have loved #polarbears for as long as I can remember. I also had an #acousticneuroma several years ago and have partial #hearingloss as a result. And no, the hospital wouldn’t let me take my #tumor home in a jar, I did ask.

By way of introduction, I'm going to share details from my favorite article to date.

We looked at preop testing (audios, vestibular testing, FN testing) of facial nerve schwannomas and #VestibularSchwannoma (#AcousticNeuroma)--an issue because often the diagnosis can only be determined intraop for schwannomas of the internal auditory canal.

The only thing we found different was that hearing was better preserved for facial schwannomas.
