After 13 years, early May is now forever associated with getting up early to stream the sounds of the morning.

We hosted a fascinating conversation with zoologist Arik Kershenbaum during last year’s Reveil weekend. A generous deep dive into animal communication, from wolf howls to whale song:

the idea that sound, too, can be divided into the traced and the untraced. perhaps the real disturbance is not inaudibility, but untraceability.

during those walks i made piezoelectric recordings, listening through contact rather than air. i lost them.

so, how do these imagined sounds interweave? which ones approach from the water, which cling to stone? what stays near, what recedes, what circulates without source? how is distance perceived when sound detaches from action?
these images sit in that gap: sound not heard, only imagined.

a map you don’t read — you listen.
places unfolding through sound, memory, drift.

It reminds me of:

I’m following both.
Slow listening, shared geographies.

Walking with a Shakuhachi Priest ⛩️

Last summer, I travelled to Nara, Japan, to meet Jonen, a Jodo Shu priest. We walked, we talked, and we listened.

This episode is a field recording—a soundwalk exploring the haunting sound of the shakuhachi. 🔹 The Japanese concept of "reading the air" (kuuki wo yomu). 🔹 Humility and presence in daily life.
