Start Small to Achieve Big Goals: The Power of Taking Baby Steps

The new year is often brimming with fresh dreams and ambitious goals. Maybe you want to write that novel, start a podcast, or finally chase a passion project that’s been sitting on the back burner. Big dreams are powerful—they spark excitement, ignite our imagination, and give us something to strive toward. But let’s be real: big dreams can also feel intimidating. That’s why the key to achieving them lies in starting small.

When I look back on my own journey, every milestone I’ve reached started with small, actionable steps. Writing Under the Flamboyant Tree didn’t begin with an entire manuscript magically appearing. It started with a dream that I almost forget if it wasn’t because I remembered to write it down and from that I started Under the Flamboyant Tree. Expanding The Ordinary Bruja into a novella (or maybe even a novel—we’ll see!) began with sketching out Marisol’s world piece by piece. Each big achievement I’ve accomplished was built from countless small wins.

So, how do you tackle a big dream without feeling overwhelmed? Here are a few strategies to help you get started:

1. Break It Down

Big dreams are just a series of smaller goals stitched together. Want to write a book? Start with writing one scene, or even one paragraph. Want to launch a blog? Begin by brainstorming five potential topics. Breaking your dream into smaller, bite-sized tasks makes the journey feel manageable and keeps you motivated as you check each one off your list.

2. Celebrate the Small Wins

Every small step forward is worth celebrating. Did you outline a chapter? Take a moment to acknowledge your progress. Published a blog post? Treat yourself to something that brings you joy. Recognizing these achievements builds momentum and keeps you motivated for the next step.

3. Create Consistent Habits

Dreams don’t come true overnight; they’re built through consistency. Create daily or weekly habits that align with your goals. For me, carving out time each day for writing or editing has been essential, even if it’s just 15 minutes. Remember, consistency doesn’t mean perfection—it means showing up, even on the hard days.

4. Embrace Imperfection

Perfectionism is the enemy of progress. I’ve learned this the hard way, especially with podcasting. Once I let go of the idea of recording the “perfect” episode, I found freedom to grow and improve. The same goes for any big dream—embrace the messiness of the process and trust that you’ll refine things along the way.

5. Reflect and Adjust

Take time to reflect on what’s working and what isn’t. If a certain approach isn’t moving you closer to your goal, don’t be afraid to pivot. Dreams evolve, and so should your strategies for achieving them.

The beauty of starting small is that it allows you to build momentum and confidence as you go. One step leads to another, and before you know it, you’ll be closer to your dream than you ever imagined. Remember, every great journey begins with a single step—so take that step today.

The journey from setting a goal to achieving it is rarely smooth. Commitment is the bridge that connects your aspirations to tangible results. But how can you stay committed when obstacles arise, motivation wanes, or life gets in the way? Here are actionable strategies to help you stay on track and turn your goals into achievements.

  • Clarify Your Why:  Before diving into the steps to achieve a goal, please take a moment to reflect on why you want to achieve it in the first place. Understanding the deeper reasons behind your goal will fuel your commitment. Ask yourself:
    • Why is this goal important to me?
    • In what way will achieving my goals improve my life or the lives of others?
    • What will happen if I do not pursue this goal?

    When your ‘why’ is powerful, it will function as a compass during challenging times, empowering and aligning you with your objective. Commitment to a goal and this understanding will give you a sense of control and confidence, even when the journey gets tough.

  • Break It Down:  Significant goals can feel overwhelming, leading to procrastination or burnout. But when you break your goal into smaller, manageable steps, you create a roadmap with specific milestones and deadlines. This approach makes progress achievable and helps you celebrate small wins, reinforcing your commitment and boosting your motivation. Each small step is a success, boosting your confidence and motivation.
  • Track your progress and acknowledge each improvement.

  • Develop a Routine: Consistency breeds success. Incorporate purposeful activities into your daily or weekly routine. Commitment to Achieve Goals could be as simple as setting aside 30 minutes each day for exercise if your goal is to improve your health or dedicating hours each weekend to work on your business plan if your goal is to start a new business. Making these activities a habit reduces the mental effort required to stay committed. Over time, working towards your goal becomes second nature.
  • Consider scheduling specific times for goal-related tasks. Treat these appointments with the same importance as work meetings or family events.

  • Stay Accountable: Accountability indeed enhances commitment. Share your goal with a friend, family, or mentor. Have someone check your progress. Alternatively, join a group of people pursuing similar goals.
  • Regularly updating someone on your progress adds an element of responsibility, making it harder to abandon your goal when motivation dips.

        5. Embrace Flexibility: Life is unpredictable, and setbacks are inevitable. Adapting and adjusting your approach without losing sight of the end goal is crucial. If a strategy is not working, pivot and try a different method. For instance, if your initial plan to start a business isn’t gaining traction, consider a different marketing strategy or a new product line. Flexibility prevents discouragement and keeps you moving forward.

  • Visualize Success: Visualization is a powerful tool athletes and successful entrepreneurs use. Take minutes each day to visualize yourself achieving your goal. If your goal is to improve your health, visualize yourself feeling energetic and fit. If you want to start a new business, visualize your business thriving and your customers happy. It is not just about imagining the result but also about mentally rehearsing your steps to get there. Picture the emotions, rewards, and sense of accomplishment. This mental rehearsal strengthens your belief in your ability to succeed, reinforcing commitment.
  • Reward Progress: You need to acknowledge and reward yourself for reaching a milestone, no matter how small. If your goal is to improve your health, treat yourself to a healthy but delicious meal after a week of consistent exercise. If your goal is to start a new business, celebrate the completion of your business plan with a relaxing weekend getaway. Commitment to Achieve Goals with Positive reinforcement boosts morale and keeps you motivated. You need to enjoy yourself by doing something you love or take a break to recharge before tackling the next step.
  • Reflect and Reassess: Regularly reflect on your progress. Evaluate what is working and what is not. Are you closer to your goal than you were last month? If not, what might be holding you back? Reflection allows you to adjust your strategy and renew your commitment. Reassess your goal if necessary. Is it still relevant and achievable? If not, changing it or setting up a new one is okay.
  • Commitment to a goal is a journey that requires patience, resilience, Self-compassion, and other strategies that will help you stay on track and grow stronger and more determined.     Discipline vs. Motivation for Success: The Key to Achieving Your Goals

    Motivation is often seen as the spark that lights the fire of action. But what if I told you that waiting for motivation could keep you stuck? There’s a truth many of us don’t realize: motivation doesn’t come first—movement does. When you start moving, motivation often follows. This is where discipline comes in, because discipline is what gets you moving when motivation is nowhere to be found.

    I’m reminded of this every time I head to the gym, especially on those days when it’s been a while, or when the weather outside is colder than I’d like. In those moments, the last thing I feel is motivated. But I’ve learned to tell myself, “Just get up. You’ll feel better once you start.” And without fail, once I’m in motion—lacing up my sneakers or driving to the gym—that initial resistance fades, and the motivation to keep going kicks in.

    The principle applies to almost everything in life: writing a book, starting a project, or even tackling mundane chores. If you wait for motivation to magically appear, you’ll be waiting forever. Discipline, on the other hand, requires you to take the first step, trusting that motivation will catch up.

    Discipline Gets You Moving

    Discipline is a commitment to yourself now and your future self. It’s the promise that you’ll show up, no matter how you feel in the moment. It’s what gets you out of bed on cold mornings, to the keyboard when the words don’t flow, and to the gym when the couch feels more inviting. Discipline says, “Start now,” even when everything else says, “Not today.”

    Motivation Follows Action

    Once you’re in motion, something magical happens: motivation begins to build. Psychologists call this the “action-motivation cycle.” When you take action, your brain rewards you with a sense of accomplishment, which fuels more motivation. It’s a positive feedback loop, but the key is to initiate the cycle with action—not wait for motivation to start it.

    How to Harness Discipline and Motivation

    If you’re ready to stop waiting for motivation and start moving, here are a few tips:

  • Start Small: When the thought of tackling a big task feels overwhelming, shrink it. Commit to five minutes at the gym, writing one paragraph, or doing one small chore. Often, once you start, you’ll keep going.
  • Focus on the End Feeling: Remind yourself how great you’ll feel afterward. For me, this works wonders at the gym. I don’t focus on the workout itself but on the energy boost and pride I’ll feel when it’s done.
  • Set Non-Negotiables: Make certain actions part of your daily or weekly routine. For example, if I’ve committed to writing at least 15 minutes a day, I treat it like brushing my teeth—it’s non-negotiable.
  • Celebrate Progress: Even small wins deserve recognition. Every step you take reinforces the habit of showing up.
  • Be Kind to Yourself: Some days will be harder than others. Missing a day doesn’t mean failure—it means you’re human. Discipline isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency over time.
  • The next time you find yourself waiting for motivation, remember this: action breeds motivation, not the other way around. Trust your discipline to carry you forward, and motivation will meet you along the way.
