🤍 National Hugging Day

Today is a reminder of the power of human connection. A hug can offer comfort, support, and reassurance, especially when words fall short.

The TTC Board has approved a $25.69 million contract for the construction of elevators at Old Mill Station, set to begin in Q2 2025. This project will make all 70 TTC stations accessible. The work includes improving signage, repairing finishes, and installing CCTV. The Easier Access Program, partially funded by the Government of Canada, aims to ensure barrier-free transit for all. Construction is ongoing at 12 other stations, with completion expected by 2026 for most. https://www.ttc.ca/new

In today's rant about rail/cycle infrastructure, I'm taking my partner's bike in for a service to get the brake lever replaced, after it snapped off when the bike fell over being lifted down out of a carriage. The distance between the carriage and platform at our station is crazy, which is awkward and expensive for cyclists but an impossible barrier for people with limited mobility.

And the last two days I’ve been busy updating Climate Action Merribek page on #MerribekCouncil elections with climate survey aggregated data, engagement of candidates across 3 surveys, links to other surveys on #MerriCreek and #AccessibleTransport and adding to the candidate responses for the 11 wards.

Every time a car does a parallel park on #SydneyRoad it holds up the movement of all vehicles: cars, delivery trucks, trams and bicycles. Oversized utes doubly so as they need more room to manoeuvre and a larger parking space. Sydney Road needs to be revitalised to prioritise vehicle movement, as well as more pedestrian and cycling space and opportunities to Green the Sydney Road Corridor with canopy trees and vegetation to provide shade and reduce the #UrbanHeatIslandEffect that is exacerbated by global warming.

State government Department of Transport planners and local politicians should be looking at what Paris has done in recent years regarding #activetransport prioritisation and greening city streets, to create a more liveable, friendly and safe environment through Brunswick and Coburg.

Also Prioritisation of accessible tram stops is an essential part of upgrading Sydney Road.

That’s our thoughts on #SydneyRoad as #Chihuahuas who need to cycle along Sydney Road to get to businesses there, and as #ChihuahuasForClimateAction

Today we joined the accessible tram stops campaign at Sydney Road, Brunswick. Only 12% of tram stops around #Melbourne are wheelchair and pram accessible. We are barking our support for all the human carers with kids in prams and strollers, or wheelchair bound people. It’s time Labor state Government made the No 19 Sydney Road tram accessible.

📣 As a blind person, I'm deeply concerned about the proposed closure of ticket offices and reduction of station personnel in England's train stations. This move would leave us with limited assistance and inaccessible services. Let's voice our opinions and participate in the consultation to ensure our needs are taken into account. #AccessibleTransport #InclusiveServices
