LOL

"Good morning Stephen,

This Black Friday, we are offering discounts for our upcoming Win More Grants and Funding Applications training, taking place on the 9th December, online.”

Any company offering Black Friday anything is irritating enough, but a grant writing workshop??? WTF!

Sometimes I think #AcademicSpam can't get any weirder and then…

"Do you want a Personal Human Online Companion? I can help you with personal, professional, family life even for smallest things. You can pay me as much as you can considering activities we do. "

Weirdest thing is it supposedly comes from a student (ac dot email address) with a CV attached. And they sent me a reminder to consider their offer…

Latest academic spam: can we AI-sloppify your research papers into a book?

"I am Ruby Stalin, Editorial assistant from UK based publishing company, contacting you with the reference from our editorial department. Basing on your outstanding contribution to the scientific community, we would like to write a book for you.
[...]
With our book writing service, we will write your research contributions in common man’s language. We will also include all your published papers into this book in a way that a common man can understand it. And then, we will publish your book with our publishing group."

And then they want me to proofread...

Somebody went ahead and did a methodological research regarding Academic Spam.

https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.i5383

We suggest further research on academic spam:

“Nobel and prestigious colleagues,

We are enthralled by prospect of novel research focus of academic spam so we make a proposition to improve enlightenment of evidence. We wish greatly to start journal and convene scientific meeting that focus on academic spam, so illustrious colleagues can form interdisciplinary web of scientific rigour to advance knowledge. Maybe we will christen soon Journal of Advances in Interdisciplinary Academic Spam and launch with alacrity the First Annual International Symposium on Academic Spam (Spam-2017). Once we identify publisher and conference organiser we will email academics to join this exciting novel venture! Honourable colleagues, stay tuned!!!!!!”

Just received an "invitation" to an Ophthalmology congress.

They promise a plenary talk of 25 minutes + Q&A, since the not-at-all-suspicious and obscure United Research Forum found my work on in X-Ray Spectroscopy in Ion Accelerators (which I actually do) extremely valuable for diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. 🤨

All I need to do is pay a symbolic registration fee.

... (sigh) they even stopped checking the research filed.
