The postbac I am mentoring has thus far applied to a 18 PhD programs (a reasonable precaution right now), 13 of which have fees for a total cost of $1,001 (AVG = 77±20, max=105, min=30). I know the numbers because, as part of the position, I committed to paying these fees out of unrestricted funds. It's a good thing, too, because as a 1st gen student, this many applications would be totally unaffordable.

How many of the "manuscripts in preparation" listed on CVs are anywhere near a drafting stage, let alone likely to actually ever be submitted? Does anyone actually take anything written in this section at all seriously? I feel like mostly it undercuts whatever other work the person has done.

It looks like there is an agreement between the Uni of Exeter and
the Université Paris-Saclay to collaborate on a number of topics.
Who do I know at Paris-Saclay who is interested in doing something together? 😃

I'm sure this has been proposed before, but I would really love it if, when I accepted a request to review a paper, that provided me with access to the cited papers. Especially when they are from the journal or publisher I'm reviewing for...

I am delighted to announce that my data paper "Locations of Markets in English Market Towns, 1813: Constructing a dataset" has just been published (open-access!) in @ZfdG

This is a deep dive/behind the scenes look into the process and decisions that went into creating a GeoJSON data set of locations of markets, based on a list in a 19th century text.

It's also very fitting that this is announced first on Mastodon since this platform played a significant role in bringing my work to the attention of the editors.

The dataset itself is deposited with KCommons Works (@hello) and I've just used the editing feature to add the data paper as a related work with the "is documented by" relation.
