Writing with Executive Dysfunction

If I'm doing things just to make neurotypical people feel less uncomfortable, that's me complying with a bit of #ableism, and I'm not okay with that. I can develop new habits that are healthy and productive and that also take my ADHD into account, so that's what I do. I didn't write every day for #AcWriMo and I don't regret it. I don't feel guilty.

That's what I'm taking away from #AcWriMoND this year. Hope all of my neurodivergent friends & allies got something positive out of the month! (4)

Yes, I started writing this blog post on technology to make writing easier when you have ADHD a long, long time ago.

That said, it's meant to be a resource. Have suggestions or different experiences? Please share!

Technology to make writing easier

Meant to be a catch-all space for tools, apps, etc. that make writing easier when you have ADHD or other conditions affecting executive functioning. Please feel free to share your own suggestions and...

@marews Having a list of easy or quick items is a life-saver for me as well. It makes such a difference. Now I need to consistently update and add to that list, then I'll really thrive at #AcWriMoND/#AcWriMo

Well I think it's safe to say I lost my #AcWriMoND momentum. The holiday had me off schedule with family and travel, and yesterday I just didn't do any writing. Had coding and other analysis to work on, plus a bunch of emails. Today is more conducive to writing, so I'm going to make an attempt at thirty minutes.

How are other folks doing? Momentum for #AcWriMo holding strong?

#ADHD #AcWriMo

I did not do my writing at the normal time. Bets on whether or not I meet my #AcWriMoND goal of 30 minutes, given I'm not sticking to my schedule? Realistically I say I have a 50/50 shot, especially because I still haven't blocked the time into my calendar...

#ADHD ##AcWriMo

Last week I remotely attended two conferences, and this week thus far includes some lingering chaos between those and the announcement that we'll be switching LMSes… (although without any related timelines).

My #AcWriMo / #AcWriMoND efforts have mostly been piecemeal, more aimed at reading and taking notes rather than extensive writing of my own.

But even trying to track this is helping me maintain momentum… and I think bouncing between re-reading a few book introduction chapters is helping clarify some things. It's something, at least!

Neurodivergent folks, do you have an in-situ system for organizing your writing? Something with color-coding or using different fonts for different stages (really rough, polished perfection)?

My in-situ organizing is pretty basic. I use headings and subheadings, but I saw another neurodivergent person's system the other day and was impressed by how detailed it was. Makes me wonder if I should explore other systems.

Already did half an hour of #AcWriMo by merging two versions of the book chapter (I had written a bunch of stuff in an old draft and needed to merge it into the most recent draft. Because there are too many fucking drafts and they're all named the same thing right now!) #AcWriMoND

I will never set a writing goal of a certain number of words or paragraphs written. Why? Because it's almost always disheartening. Write for 30 minutes, yes that is something I can achieve, even if means working on writing-adjacent tasks or writing notes for a lesson plan.

It's much easier for me to build in the flexibility my #ADHD brain needs if I set goals that are "attempt" for 30 minutes or goals that are purposefully vague like "write" for 30 minutes.
