Master Slave Husband Wife

The 2024 Pulitzer Prize winner for Biography by Ilyon Woo that tells the story of Ellen & William Craft + their escape from slavery in 1848 Georgia. Ellen, whose father was a white plantation owner was enslaved by her half sister, working as a seamstress + house servant. William, her husband, worked as a hired out carpenter for his master. Ellen who was extremely light skinned disguised herself as a wealthy southern planter while William portrayed her slave in order to make their escape. The 1st half of this book is a gripping tale - the 2nd half however looses the thread as Ellen + William travel to England - their story gets lost amid the politics + the stories of other abolitionist who help them on their journey.

"If one stands in so intimate a relationship with a man as I do with Douglass, one comes to know facets of the whole world, of men + women, which would otherwise remain closed, especially if it is a man whom the entire world has seen + whom so many women have loved."

A 20 year friendship between Frederick Douglass & German born feminist, freethinker, + abolitionist Ottilie Assing was to end in tragedy. After learning that Douglass had married Helen Pitts, Assing killed herself by swallowing cyanide in a public park in Paris. As per her will all her letters with Douglass were burned. She bequeathed him ongoing income from a trust fund + his choice of books from her library.

BBC: Writer’s poems helped boost the abolition campaign. “Letters written by a prominent abolitionist are being digitised, filling in a ‘massive bit of the jigsaw’ in the abolition campaign history, experts say. Novelist Hannah More, born in Bristol in 1745, also helped open some of the UK’s first schools for working class people.”

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1859, #JohnBrown and a dozen #abolitionists seized the armoury at #HarpersFerry, hoping to arm a #slave uprising. Slavery never ended in the US, and all it takes for evil like that to flourish is for good people to do nothing.

You've probably heard that the "very stable genius" has ordered "the removal" of this very infamous (but important) picture, among others.

Known as "the Scourged back," this photo was widely circulated by #abolitionists and became one of the most notable photos of 19th century America.

I wish I knew what to do, so I'm circulating the image.
