The Thinking Garden by Judi Milne @inkminxtattoos at St Nicolas Centre, The New Vestry, Back Wynd, Aberdeen, Scotland in September 2016 as part of @nuartaberdeen's Painted Doors Project in . Photos taken April 2025.

'It's called "The Thinking Garden" the idea being when you see it from a distance, it attracts you closer until you read the hidden message in the gate... "Blood sweat and tears really don't matter, just the things that we do in this garden" based on lyrics from "This Garden" by The Levellers, basically a simple mantra in life, to make sure your everyday efforts are not in vain, the Bee representing this perfectly.' @inkminxtattoos Sept 12, 2016

'This work by Bahia Shehab is a graphic interpretation of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish’s poem You Are Forgotten As If You Never Existed, the direct translation of the mural is “Bear witness that I am free and alive”. Bahia painted this mural with volunteers who are specifically interested in this topic.

The poem invites viewers to recognise the human ideals of freedom and dignity. Bahia asks you to bear witness to the atrocities being committed against other fellow humans and to testify that our collective humanity and resilience is “free and alive.” The Arabic text in white is painted against a large watermelon. The mural is a stanza in Arabic from the poem, «You are forgotten, as if you never existed» by the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. The mural was painted for the city of Aberdeen by the artist and members of the community as part of the Nuart Aberdeen festival in 2024.

Bahia Shehab is an artist and author based in Cairo. She is a Professor of Design and founder of the graphic design program at The American University in Cairo where she developed a full design curriculum focused on the visual culture of the Arab world. She frequently lectures internationally on Arab visual culture and design education, peaceful protest, and Islamic cultural heritage. Her work is concerned with identity and preserving cultural heritage. Through investigating Islamic art history she reinterprets contemporary Arab politics, feminist discourse and social issues.' @nuartaberdeen June 14, 2024

POLLUTION FOREST by Spanish artist Escif @escif at 20 Thistle Street (near Rose Street), Aberdeen, Scotoand in June 2023. Photos taken April 2025.
⠀⠀⠀
"Spanish artist Escif returns to Nuart with one of his tertiary landscapes, using the recently adopted medium of ink made from harvested pollution. With the topic of this year’s festival being Rewilding, Escif’s muted landscape adds another dimension to an otherwise ordinary Aberdonian urban parking lot.
The image chosen by the artist was taken from the Caledonian Forest, an ancient temperate forest in Scotland. The forest has due to human actions over thousands of year reduced in size to its current extent. By the 1950s, only 1 precent of the original Caledonian Forest, that once covered most of Scotland, remained.
The mural was painted using @air.ink, which is the world’s first ink made out of air pollution particulate matters. By creating a new pictoral forest by using ink created from one of humanities most destructive inputs on the landscape, the choice of material and image reinforces the themes of the work and the festival at large." @nuartaberdeen June 17, 2023

"Last week I painted a large scale mural in Scotland, as I was one of the lucky artists to be (re)invited to the magnificent NuArt Aberdeen street art festival.
The main piece I did features the three main disciplines when it comes to letters:
- calligraphy (first layer painted with a broom)
- typography (roman capitals, Benguiat-style)
- lettering (details, drips and colored initials)
It reads:
Real graffiti writers
Do this illegally
Hanging from a rope
In the dark
Abseiling (or rappelling) graffiti is the latest and most admirable of the many forms of illegal name-writing. Born in São Paolo and Berlin, now practiced by daredevils worldwide. It shows us that graffiti culture is still evolving to highs (no pun intended) we never could have imagined.
My piece on the 7 by 30 meter wall is a twofold tribute.
Firstly, I am in awe of those who put their life on the line (another unintended pun) for our illegal existentialist cause, by hanging from buildings. I sometimes feel ashamed to not to get involved in this, but at the tender age of 56, my urge to get up (unintended pun #3) may just not be what it once was.
Secondly, my mural for NuArt Aberdeen is a tribute to the –genius but still somewhat unknown– Amsterdam graffiti pioneer Dr. Rat (Ivar Vičs), who bombed my city with his excellent drawings and ‘gothic’ letters before his untimely death in 1981. There is much to say about his work but better is it to watch the video ‘Dr. Rat Pissteeg’ on YouTube and you’ll see what I mean." @nielsshoemeulman June 13, 2024

By Portuguese artist Tamara Alves @tamara_aalves at Skene Street, Aberdeen, Scotland in June 2023 as part of @nuartaberdeen festival where the theme was Rewilding. Photos taken April 2025.

"The theme resonated deeply with my work because I constantly explore the relationship between the human and the wild. For me, rewilding is not just about restoring nature but also about reconnecting with our own instinctive and visceral side.
For my mural at Nuart Festival ‘23, I wanted to explore this idea of liberation and reconnection. So often, we find ourselves trapped in a sense of control, and art has the power to break those barriers. In my creative process, I work a lot with intuition—I let the image emerge as I draw, almost as if the figures were already there, waiting to be revealed." @tamara_aalves

"The picts were an ancient people native to Scotland in the middle ages and in many way the reason Scots still exist. The mystery surrounding them is intoxicating, the only recorded written history of their existence comes from Roman and Viking encounters. Labelled 'painted people' aka picts due to the blue pigment and tattoo work that covered their bodies, they were hardy warriors who fought off countless invasions. Pictish stone carvings are the lasting evidence of their existence by their own hand, scattered allover Monoliths across the east coast of Scotland, the markings similar to Ogham but near impossible to fully understand. They managed to master carving granite, a very tough stone to work with, but not easily weathered thus it holds their carvings to this day. They worshiped many dieties as Pagans, adopting varying gods along the way, however eventually were converted by the sweeping wave of Christian influence. It is just one example of many indigenous cultures being written out of history to this day, culturally eradicated and/ or displaced. History repeats and loops through the ages." @cbloxx_ July 16, 2024
