Inside an old abandoned Irish hospital lies a collection of old medical machines. This one is a hyperbaric chamber, developed in the 1960s.

This Vickers Hyperbaric Oxygen Bed System was designed to provide patients with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). This was used to treat decompression sickness in scuba divers (the "bends"), carbon monoxide poisoning and other ailments.

The system was phased out of use in UK hospitals in the 1990s.

🏥 North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary, Stoke-On-Trent. Without a doubt, my favourite abandoned hospital! So many old operating theatres date from between the 1920s and 1970s; many still had power when I explored a few years ago. Sadly, all these areas are now demolished.

The Red Cross Hospital, Italy

Laying atop a remote hill, over 1km above sea level. This hospital opened around the turn of the 20th Century. It was once a sanatorium, a hospital which would specifically focus on holistic treatments for respiratory diseases. These included diseases such as tuberculosis.

The site was abandoned in the 1980s.

🏥🇵🇱 This abandoned hospital was a once-bustling medical centre, serving a small town in western Poland. It closed down around several years ago, leaving a maze of colourful corridors, empty wards and operating theatres to explore.

Around 10 years ago, the company that owned it filed for bankruptcy. As the last ward of children were discharged, the hospital was shuttered and left empty.
