How does gravity influence antimatter? 💫

In a world first, #SFUPhysics distinguished professor Mike Hayden and a team of international researchers succeeded in directly observing what happens to #antimatter when it interacts with #gravity: https://ow.ly/JFzv50QIoYT #SFUScience #SFU #physics #ATLASExperiment #CERN

Answering a decades-long antimatter question

Scientists have known about antimatter for more than 90 years, and they have learned a vast amount about the way it behaves. However, the question of how gravity influences antimatter had never been answered—until now. Certainly, antimatter ought to fall down towards Earth the way ordinary matter does in the presence of gravity. Or as science fiction suggests, antimatter might “fall up,” but ultimately, the only way to know for sure was to actually observe what happens.

GÉANT and the NRENs ready for the demands of EuroHPC | GÉANT CONNECT Online

On 21 September 2022, Sebastiano Buscaglione, Senior Network Architect and member of the GÉANT Network Evolution team, observed a significant increase in traffic on one of GÉANT’s backbone trunk links between Geneva and Milan. Upon investigation, he discovered that the traffic was coming from ARNES, the Slovenian NREN, which is connected to a GÉANT router

My PhD in particle physics didn't make me a better physicist

TL,DR : I learned everything essential to a successful career but didn't learn how to increase our knowledge about nature. I did my PhD from 2011...

Wonderful memory of New Year's Eve day, 10 years ago: I gave an outreach lecture on the Higgs boson, the discovery of which we announced earlier that year, to an attentive group of schoolchildren in Purkal Village, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. I used stones from the Ganges River to represent protons and beauty quarks, and a pomegranate bought in Rishikesh to represent the Higgs. #higgs #higgboson #PYDS #Purkal #India #physics #particle #particlephysics #scicomm #cern #atlas #atlasexperiment

Work: I’m a nuclear physicist for #BrookhavenNationalLaboratory working on collider experiments at #CERN (#AtlasExperiment) and BNL (#sPHENIX). Recovering blogger.
Home: part time Brooklyner (#FortGreene) and part time Southern Vermonter, dad. Even a part time music producer (entropybound.bandcamp.com)

Hello! I am a particle physicist working on the #ATLASExperiment at the Large Hadron Collider at #CERN. Originally from Slovenia, currently based in Hamburg, Germany working for #DESY.

In my free time I do #outreach (http://particle-clicker.web.cern.ch), play with weather data (https://vremenar.app) and #maps (https://maplibre.org), or promote citizen science.

May or may not post photos at @[email protected]

An addictive incremental game that was made during the CERN Webfest 2014. It takes the player on a historic journey through modern particle physics.

ATLAS Experiment OpenData – User Notes

This is just a quick note for people using ATLAS Experiment OpenData with Oracle VirtualBox VMs on Fedora. The installation of the ATLAS VM is wonderfully described here. I just have two quick notes…
