China puts Japanese companies on export control lists

China has put 20 Japanese companies on an export control list and 20 others on a watchlist, as tensions continue over the Japanese leader’s previous comments on Taiwan, the self-governed island Beijing claims as its own. Chinese exporters will be banned from selling dual-use goods, which can be used both for civilian and military purposes, to 20 Japanese companies, according to a statement Tuesday by China’s Commerce Ministry. Companies targeted include multiple subsidiaries of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, as well as divisions of Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Fujitsu, among others. China has earlier criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who in November implied that Japan could militarily intervene in a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan.

25 Mexican National Guard troops left dead during an operation that killed cartel leader 'El Mencho'

Mexico Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch says 25 members of the National Guard were left dead in Jalisco in six separate attacks after the killing of Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes. Known as “El Mencho,” he was the boss of one of the fastest-growing criminal networks in Mexico, notorious for trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine to the United States and staging brazen attacks against government officials who challenged it. Also killed were a prison guard, an agent from the state prosecutor’s office and a woman whom García Harfuch did not identify. He also said Monday some 30 criminal suspects were killed in Jalisco and four others were killed in Michoacan.

Guillermo Beltrán walked away with two heavy bags on Thursday, each containing an essential haul — rice, beans, amaranth and crackers — complemented by a bottle of oil, large cans of sardines and canned peaches. Every label carried the same simple phrase “Made in #Mexico.”

Beltrán, a 70-year-old Cuban father of two, was one of several hundred recipients of #Mexican #humanitarian assistance, ordered by President #ClaudiaSheinbaum in support of the island nation as it faces blackouts and severe fuel shortages worsened by a #US #oil #embargo.

“I feel very grateful,” said Beltrán. “The Mexican president should be praised to the skies for showing such concern and courage.”

Cubans thank Mexico for food donations as energy crisis deepens

Mexico is sending major food aid to Cuba as the island struggles with fuel shortages and widespread blackouts. On Thursday, hundreds of people in Havana received bags of staples marked “Made in Mexico.” Mexico’s navy ships have brought roughly 800 tons of supplies to the island. The Cuban government says the food supports vulnerable families, including homes with underweight children or elderly relatives. State media has shown images of deliveries moving through bodegas, which use the ration book system. The crisis has grown since 2020 amid tighter U.S. sanctions and new pressure on oil sales.

At the inaugural meeting of his Board of Peace in Washington, President #Trump spoke of billions of dollars pledged to rebuild the #Gaza Strip and a “new and harmonious” #MiddleEast rising from the ashes of war. Videos aired at the meeting showed a future of gleaming high-rises and new soccer pitches.

There was no sign of such optimism in Gaza, where #Palestinians who have spent months or even years in squalid displacement camps or the rubble of their homes hold out little hope for change.

“We see nothing of that on the ground. There is no hope. Education and health care are gone. There is no life,” he said.

#Israel says Gaza will not be rebuilt until #Hamas has laid down its weapons...that has emerged as a major sticking point.
