Kehrtwende in Bayreuth?!

Erst schmeißen die Bayreuther Festspiele Michel Friedman und die Musiker:innen die ein Gedenkkonzert mit dem Titel "Verstummte Stimmen" hätten geben sollen raus.

Jetzt entschuldigte sich offenbar Festspielleiterin Katharina Wagner und will Konzert und Rede von Herrn Friedman doch zulassen.

Warum jedes Jahr tausende zu den Wagner Festspielen pilgern, angesichts des unstreitigen Antisemitismus von Richard Wagner, hier sind Werk und Künstler untrennbar, ist seit Jahrzehnten irritierend.

Sich dann erst mit Michel Friedman und einem Gedenkkonzert schmücken wollend, ein bisschen Kosmetik, das alles absagen, die Schuld auch noch Friedman unterschiebend ("Sicherheitsrisiko") nur um dann eine Kehrtwende von 180 Grad hinzulegen, nachdem es aus Politik und Kultur massive Kritik und Protest gab

Regular reminder that the #CivilRights movement has one issue with #Israel's #government: it's a matter of policies, and it has nothing to do with who is or isn't Jewish.

Opposing what #Netanyahu does is meaningless if we don't also oppose all forms of #bigotry and authoritarianism, and that especially goes for people who use our opposition of the Israeli government and the deep and corrupting connection that members of both US political parties have to the corrupt members of that foreign government. We must never forget that #racism and #authoritarianism ARE the enemy, and we cannot win by siding with #racists, even if it seems "convenient" not to argue.

This is important now, perhaps more than ever, as the masks come off and we enter an era where hateful speeches about Jews are given at the white house.

We need to stand together.

Wagner's antisemitism is a controversial topic now? I don't even recognize the world I live in these days.

"The #BayreuthFestival, held annually to celebrate the works of #RichardWagner, has cancelled a lecture which was specifically intended to address the composer’s notorious #antisemitism, citing “#securityconcerns”.

As reported by the #SüddeutscheZeitung newspaper, #Jewish #author and #broadcaster #MichelFriedman was due to give a speech at a memorial #concert, “Silenced Voices”, to be held on the morning of 26 July, immediately ahead of the opening of the #festival itself later that day. However, the #Bayreuth festival itself has since announced the cancellation of the earlier event."
