Jozef Garlinski & Eileen Short
"I shan't make any attempt to get away, I shall stay in Warsaw. I will wait for you"
On the 1st of September 1939 Nazi Germany invaded Poland. 25-year-old Christian Pole Jozef Garlinski had just fallen in love with Eileen Short, an Irish nurse on an exchange visit from Liverpool. His colonel gave him an hour's leave to get married before the regiment left for the front. Eileen's parting words to Jozef were her commitment to wait.
Jozef joined the Polish underground resistance. He was arrested in April 1943 + arrived at Auschwitz in May. Eileen remained in Warsaw. During the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 she helped care for wounded. The German SS captured + shot anyone who looked like a soldier or who was wearing an armband. Eileen survived only because her red cross armband had falllen off + was stuffed in her pocket. The survivors were taken to a camp for civilians near the city. She escaped from the camp + spent the next few months with relatives of Jozef..
Jozef + Eileen had decided before the war that if they were separated + the Soviets took over Poland they would head for the West + contact each other through Eileen's mother in Ireland. Their plan was successful, both reaching London where they settled + raised their son.
