It's barely been three days since I drew that first ship art and I already have an idea for another silly Sonic/Zelda fanart (Pocky kiss, or an attempt at one, maybe. The height difference may make things most couples take for granted awkward. But it's a feature, not a bug. Bite me.)

Also I've been playing some of her games. I told myself it was just a little bit so I'd be able to write Zelda in character if I make any fanfics about this pairing, but I think I'm re-entering my Zelda phase in general too. I've forgotten how much I love this series (Breath of the Wild carried me through the pandemic.)

Funnily enough, I don't think I shipped Zelda with anyone at the time I originally played the games. But then again, I didn't see much of her, aside from the flashbacks in BotW. I remember thinking she was really neat though. Burdened, resilient, with a bit of a playful side (trying to get Link to eat a frog!)

As for shipping, I was only vaguely aware of it as a concept at the time, as I didn't engage with online fandom and was more of a casual player, but Link was very much my fandom bicycle. I think I saw Zelda and Link more as childhood friends, or something (not saying the two are mutually exclusive, but...) My main ship was Link and Mipha, for sure. (I remember writing a bit of a one-shot about them, stuck in a cave and she convinces Link to kiss her 'for practice' ) and possibly a bit of Link and Midna from the Twilight Princess manga I read (though I seem to remember thinking of it as a crack pairing, before I knew what a crack pairing was. I only read the first volume.)

And Link and Paya! I remember feeling so sorry for that girl. She was so awkward, it was endearing. I remember wishing I could romance her in the game, but it seems some things aren't meant to be XD

I think I theorized that Link was too focused on Mipha to consider her affection seriously. (Usually I projected directly onto Link, so I needed to come up with a reason that felt plausible. Hey! A headcanon before I knew what a headcanon was...!)
