RE: https://mastodon.online/@mastodonmigration/116701458400797917

Closely related to the capex trap is the "AI washing" that we hear every time big tech fires thousands of employees.

The capital structures to fund the massive trillion dollar data center spending will make the quarterly reports real ugly. A significant drop in stock price kind of ugly.

Firing thousands of employees is a way to patch this.

But tech executives are never honest about it, like they're never honest about anything they say. Instead they attempt to placate the market with some made up excuse like, "we are reorganizing the business for the next phase of hyper-efficient, AI-driven, automated future". The mere mention of AI buys them some extra stock hype levitation, provides some shield for their own bonuses, and obscures their mismanagement of the business.

They really are obsessive, habitual liars.

155,000 people lost jobs between 2023-2026 for AI transformations that delivered no returns. We analyzed 1,000 SEC filings from 32 companies that linked layoffs to AI, built datasets, cross-referenced claims against audited financials. Margins stayed flat or worsened at companies that fired people to buy AI, while only infrastructure sellers saw improvements.

Jack Dorsey demonstrated both versions with the poise of a man who had already forgotten what he said 12 months ago. Cut 931 people in March 2025 ("not about AI"), then 4,000 more in February 2026 ("100 people + AI = 1,000 people"). Block's stock surged 25% on the second announcement. https://readuncut.com/the-ai-bet-corporate-america-actually-made-it-wasnt-productivity/

AI Layoffs and Wage Compression: The Bet Corporate America Made

AI gave corporate America a way to gut headcount and get applauded for it. An NBER study found only 2% of execs attributed cuts to actual AI, but 60% cut in anticipation of efficiencies that haven't arrived. The bet was never productivity. It was permanent wage compression with better PR.

After #RSAC Conference 2026, every booth was screaming the same thing: AI, AI, AI. 😱

So Sean Martin & Marco Ciappelli sat back down with Lisa Liu, Corporate Marketing and Communications Manager at Stellar Cyber, to ask what was actually true on that show floor — and what was just a sticker.

Stellar Cyber has been building machine learning into its platform since 2015, long before AI became the default marketing label. Lisa pulls no punches on the AI-washing problem, the difference between a marketing label and an architectural decision, and why a "fully autonomous SOC" is exactly the part of the pitch that should set off your alarm bells.

A huge thank you to the team at Stellar Cyber for joining us on this journey — both on the floor at hashtag#RSAC2026 and in the recap. We loved sharing your story and we're looking forward to many more conversations ahead. 🙌

📍 Where are we headed next? Glad you asked: Infosecurity Europe and Black Hat USA — see you there.

Learned a new Term yesterday: #AIwashing !

What does AI-washing mean? It's similar to greenwashing. Claim that something is caused by / made because of X while in reality the reason is totally different.

2 examples:

1.) Facebook to lay off 20% of it's employees because of "AI will replace them".
Reality: Zuckerberg dumped billions USD into MetaVerse without any revenue.
It was really a dumb idea in the first place - even before AI...
