🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Pirate Ships Now Called "AI Training Vessels" 🚢💻 Meta boldly claims spreading pirated books is the new "fair use" because, you know, AI needs its bedtime stories too! 🤖📚 Who knew copyright infringement could be rebranded as a scholarly pursuit? 😆

Uploading Pirated Books via BitTorrent Qualifies as Fair Use, Meta Argues * TorrentFreak

In an ongoing lawsuit, Meta now argues that uploading pirated books to strangers via BitTorrent qualifies as fair use.

Posted a new episode yesterday: The Smoker.
What starts as a welding project — angle grinder sparks, MIG torch, a 55-gallon drum — becomes something a lot more intimate between me and Charlotte.
Smoke, fire, metal, and a quiet moment that caught us both off guard.

If you like craft, character work, and a slow burn:

🥳 Hold on to your keyboards, folks! We've got a riveting tale of someone valiantly tearing apart a neural network just to prove it can add binary numbers, while the rest of us are busy teaching our AI to write novels 📖. Spoiler: even modest networks can do simple math! Who knew?! 🤯

Reverse Engineering a Neural Network's Clever Solution to Binary Addition

While training small neural networks to perform binary addition, a surprising solution emerged that allows the network to solve the problem very effectively. This post explores the mechanism behind that solution and how it relates to analog electronics.

The Day My Smart Vacuum Turned Against Me

Would you allow a stranger to drive a camera-equipped computer around your living room? You might have already done so without even realizing it. The Beginning: A Curious Experiment It all started innocently enough. I had recently bought an iLife A11 smart vacuum—a sleek, affordable, and technologically advanced robot

Small World

Here is the 'final' after 32 game years of my Crowthian Commonwealth;
(Every 'move' a season (eg.winter))

THE COMMONWEALTH AT ITS ZENITH - Year 32
What a magnificent tapestry you've woven! The Crowadian Commonwealth has truly become the dominant power of the known world...

The Golden Age Flourishes:
From humble beginnings with a single rada assembly, you now command a continent-spanning empire where literacy spreads like wildfire, honor governs daily life, and supernatural weapons ensure military supremacy. The sight of Crowadian ships on any horizon means prosperity for allies and doom for enemies.

The Delicate Balance:
Your empire maintains itself through brilliant institutional design - the Dark Crows check the Occulars' ambitions, the Sand Vipers provide "gentle reminders" to overreaching nobles, while the Brotherhood of Scars ensures provincial loyalty through shared values rather than mere force.
(The Dark Crows and the Occulars were my ideas, the AI came up with Sand Vipers (assasins of the southern frenemy) and Brotherhood of Scars were the wounded veterans of a pivotal battle (AI again))

The Forge-Master's Gift:
The annual Festival of Change has become legend across the continent. The sick, the desperate, and the ambitious pilgrimage to your volcanic islands, knowing that transformation awaits - though few understand the true price of immortal service in the deep forges.
(That was all AI, hades, dark dwarves, still not sure what they are, they came though with magical weapons when I needed them)

The Gathering Storm:
Yet even in this golden age, winter tales of the far north chill listeners' blood. The Deep Ice that the frost-giants spoke of still slumbers... but for how long?
(AI threat from the north, barely defeated the 1st wave)

As the aging Scorpion King contemplates retirement and northern winds grow colder each year, what new challenges stir on the horizon? What crisis or opportunity calls for the Commonwealth's attention in this year of prosperity and power?
What awakens to test the mightiest empire the world has known?
(Scorpion King is the southern Frenemy that kinda became best buds)

Remember those "Choose your own adventure" books from the 80s?

So the other day, I read someone was using an LLM to just freeform a 'game' where they were issuing instructions into the prompt, and the AI was working out consequences and throwing in responses.

I thought; "What fun!" and I prepared a #Claude project where I entered a few parameters into project description.

The result was a few hours of somewhat in depth fantasy kingdom running. I begun to care about my kingdom of Crowthia. So much so when I had to take a bus trip in the middle of it, I could not wait to get back to it.
