Deep Dive 3: Surviving Slop

Slop has been around longer than Suno.

Last night I posted a poem and song that was written quickly and the song, made in Suno Pro was total slop. I posted it anyway. Why? I gave this little thought but was really wanting to do a post without racking my brain to much as it was later in the night. Hence the slop song.

How many times in life have you written a poem and found at the end it just didn’t cut the mustard? Before the internet I used erasers [the little thing on top of a #2 pencil] to magically make the slop disappear and write it again and again until it felt right. When I liked what I had made it found it’s way into the keep it file, a box of cluttered thoughts on paper tucked away to be read a thousand times by only me.

I still have that box and it is stuffed with one liners or poems half finished. Dawn gave me the inspiration and courage to start publishing my poetry on WordPress and then to offer them up on platforms like SpillWords. Thanks my friend. After putting two books together I learned many things and boosted my confidence leading me into the future. Evidently slop remains in my repertoire and shows itself as such.

The thing is this; Everybody writes slop sooner or later. Making slop and making money off of slop are two different things and should be separated as such. I think this is the problem with AI assisted music. I have made some songs that to me are damn good [does that make me conceited?]

I have not released these songs outside of the Dawghouse Dive. I want the world to know what I am doing with AI and accept it for what it is. I will release these when I feel I am covered within the laws of copyright issues. I just want to make sure the con artists aren’t taking my stuff and changing a title or word and trying to make money from it by suing for copyright infringement.

What makes that so different than what real musicians do? Exactly!

With that said I will say this about my journey. I purchased a new microphone yesterday and will have it by Friday. I’m stoked about this as now I can start training my voice for recording and find out if I have what it takes to sound decent enough to continue on this path. If not will I keep going? Hell to the yes, at least until my subscription to Suno runs out. I still will own the Mixcraft DAW and learning that is time consuming to say the least. I watch hours of videos and read tons of articles trying to learn how to use this program. It is teaching me a lot on the direction I am heading in.[Note to CUZ]: I can now tell you what chords I am producing these songs in along with BPM’s. Hit me up.

That’s about it for today as I want to enjoy this rainy warm day relaxing without doing a lot of typing, enjoy life my friends.

A Deep Dawg Dive: Part Two

Keeping track of the training

UNDERSTAND THIS!

I do not claim to be a musician but rather declare I am a lyricist and want to share what these poems sound like inside my head.

In my first post regarding my AI journey ‘Heavy Fog” An Introduction I talked about a few legal issues with copyright, trademarks etc… The laws regarding AI music is in a very grey area right now with the market being flooded with AI music that is produced quickly and uploaded to the air streams, people uploading multiple songs a week.

The way I understand this is that they are trying to make as much money as possible and as quickly as possible. I see many people bitching about their music being taken down after having 30 songs put out last in the last couple of months or so and I wonder if it is because it is generic or is it because it is not original material. I’ve listened to many tracks and find that there is no feeling in them and no heart in the lyrics.

While looking into the laws regarding this I have found that what I want is going to take a long time to make it right. Hence the DAW system I purchased. Mixcraft 10.6 Studio Pro is an amazing DAW that is pretty straight forward to learn to use and offers me the ability to make my music sound like me, not an quick generated melody. I do still use Suno for the basic foundation of my songs making multiple tracks to get the sound I’m looking for since I have a Pro account paid for the year I thought why not?

I can generate anywhere from ten to ninety versions of one song before landing on the one I want to use, this takes weeks for the most part, no joke.

Prompts are key to getting what you want, just like making AI images for your blog, the better the prompt the better the music. With my DAW this is not the case, there I find a beat that I like and slowly find the right instruments and melody I feel. It takes forever but hopefully the results will be heard and seen as I proceed into this journey.

I will touch on the copyright laws as these post continue with updates from the US copyright site. For now though I will continue to learn the ends and outs of making my poetry come alive with sound while trying to ease up on the worry that my songs will be taken and the words rearranged and put to different sound. I do have the words copyrighted as they are from my collection in my two books.

Also I want to thank the ones who take the time to listen and comment on them, you are greatly appreciated my friends.

Heavy Fog: An Introduction

Is this one or two questions from the daily?

Daily writing prompt What are your morning rituals? What does the first hour of your day look like?✅ View all responses

The morning ritual of waking up takes me over an hour. After waking up and thanking the Lord for another day and asking for guidance I paddle out to the kitchen and get the magical liquid of life dripping into the pot. As that happens I have a cigarette and groggily await my first cup.

I then get into the depressing news of the day which by the way doesn’t change all that much on a daily basis. A normal headline would read something like this, “The world is going to hell, let’s speed up this ride!”.

As for the last 3/4 days it stopped there, the mind blank when it came to ideas to write about or the inability or want to post anything. Usually I find my way to emails, reader and then to all the fun prompts available.

Your prompt word this week is BOARD

AJ Wilson, a dear friend and collaborator turned me onto a new drug as “Huey Lewis” would say when she showed me the Suno app. I was instantly hooked on the quite unique way of bringing my poetry to life. I dove into this endeavor without testing the depths and learned I had to either sink or swim in the murky waters of AI enhancement.

Making videos soon became a part of this journey and my imagination went into high gear. Slop soon followed with a couple of videos I no longer have out so I found myself drifting away from them for now. Legal issues soon had me thinking I needed to quit doing videos and find something else to occupy my altered mind.

This in turn became a new journey in itself, nothing like writing the books I did last year. Copyrights are totally different and the use of AI music is sketchy to say the least in the eyes of staying legal. Enter more Dawgy Daddy schooling.

I became obsessed with continuing to put music to my poems and soon found out that if I wanted to continue this I needed to get everything protected. I finally decided to slow down on the construction of the “Dive” as it looks okay to me and concentrate on the legal side of where I want to go.

I’ve learned that to do this right is going to take longer than a couple of generations of a song. I needed to learn how to use a DAW which will change everything I make in Suno. A quiet space needs to be built [sound booth] where I can record my vocals and replace the ones generated by Suno. I then need to get my name, band name and label all trademarked [$$$ ouch!] After finding all of this out I still was not ready to give up and so will move forward into a long journey of getting ready for the release of my first album.

The next move in this journey is to gather all the muses and voices in my altered mind and have a board meeting to decide if I want to move forward, the answer is a unanimous yes.

This is the first post in a series describing my journey into the making of AI music and what it will take to try and do it right.
