File under: AI Resistance

I'm reading – and enjoying immensely – @emilymbender and @alex's book #TheAICon.

I've been learning a lot of things and something that really stood out recently is the need to be careful about the language we use to describe these systems. Bender and Hanna helpfully explain:

"It matters what words we use when we talk about these technologies. For instance, in our writing, we don’t use the term “hallucination” to discuss the errors of LLMs, for two reasons. First, if it’s used tongue-in-cheek, it is making light of what can be symptoms of serious mental illness. Second,
“hallucination” refers to the experience of perceiving things that aren’t there. But LLMs actually don’t have perceptions, and suggesting that they do is yet more unhelpful anthropomorphization. That means we also avoid assigning thought processes to these systems, or saying that they can
“think”. Metaphors have power, they structure the frames of discourse, and they can subtly and insidiously encourage certain ways of understanding technology and the social systems it is embedded in."

Antropomorphizing AI contributes to AI hype. Thanks Emily and Alex for helping me see things this way!

Brain fry, cognitive debt, workslop, parasocial attachment and one I think I coined: reverse fine-tuning.

Intensive coding-agent use has psychological and organizational costs; the vocabulary to describe that is scattered around blogs and academia.

Two pieces to paint a bigger picture:

The vocabulary: https://nlkw.de/en/blog/vocabulary-of-getting-fried/

The same thing as a choose your own adventure-type short story (fictional Berlin startup, works-as-designed ≠ works-as-intended): https://nlkw.de/en/blog/getting-fried-part-1-kognit/

The Vocabulary of Getting Fried

A taxonomy of what intensive AI use does to developer cognition, bodies, codebases, teams, and relationships with the tool. Nineteen terms, with sources.

🤖 "AI is not the messiah of tech, it's the harbinger of doom!" proclaims Currys' blog, pretending to see the future while recycling old newsletters. 📜 Let's just say, if AI ends the digital wave, it's because it got bored of reading this #nonsense. 🤦‍♂️

AI could be the end of the digital wave, not the next big thing

The AI boom is more likely a marker of the end of the 50-year digital boom than the start of a new wave of innovation.

First, substack bad.
Its a fascist, antitrans platform.
The hypocrisy paradox has eaten its own tail, posting an anti-neoliberal intellectualism essay on that platform.

The essay is rich in highbrow ideas, and I do not do it justice engaging with it.

My critique generally applies to many #Luddite #AI antagonists, folks who do not use a tech, having very strong (and usually inaccurate) opinions about tech they don't use.

You can not conduct literally critique if your reading skill is at grade 10. Or more crass, virgins commenting about evils of sex.

How do I know the author has not used AI in any depth? Because they think it provides instant answers... Which is true if you ask it simple questions. But I myself had many Socratic dialogues with the model delving into depths of science anywhere from Information warfare to Exotic manifold.

Show me YOUR landing page of YouTube, and Ill tell you the level the algorithm shoots at.

Once more with a feeling:

LLM (ChatGpt etc) is not AI, its just a bunch of algorithms hallucinating about predicting words.

AI is just a buzzword, used to create hype. What we have now is not even close to a real AI. Don't buy the bullshit.
