I finished watching “A Discovery of Witches.” It was beautifully shot, but I have some thoughts.

One (two) more thing…
Also, a lot of these vampires have genocided. A happy ending if they agree to stop murdering? Also, didn’t the goddess warn of a cost for saving Matthew’s life? What was that cost?

Let’s talk more about racism. Coming back to daemons (wonderfully cast, I think), the daemons tended to be more people of color. A quick racial coding in stark contrast of most of the vampires, until we get to New Orleans. Lots of Black folk here, but also the location for a mass killing of vampires by a higher up in their family tree. The optics are palpable.
Now, granted, much of this series is set in Europe, notable for populations of people considered white. I suppose with the longevity and Eurocentric origin(?) of creatures, a lot of them might just tend to be… shrug
The historical settings and costumes were fascinating. I’m imagining what it’d be like to discuss long bygone eras with a vampire of a millenium years in age. But people are people though, right?
Edit: The ending was quite tidy. If only an end to descrimination and segregation could be effected by fiat.

First of all, fascinating world building. Weaving vampires and witches and daemons into the story.
The topic of creature DNA was fascinating, and I’d have loved to have spent more time exploring that—perhaps the book series goes deeper there. The acknowledgment of racism and power imbalances was nice! I would have loved to learn more about the daemon experience, but it was very “V” focused (double and otherwise), mirroring the power imbalance—again, wondering if this is a choice of the television adaptation.
Although this partly reflects attitudes and prejudices, I was not pleased with the extent of the “bury your gays” trope. Two queer couples had their partners killed off (one on screen). Ugh. How old is the source material? There was some decency in acknowledging one of the wronged surviving widows of the couples, but, sigh
Of course, the entire series is focused on genocide, we can’t forget that.
