It's a very wild story. And aggressively 90s.

That's not necessarily a complaint, but a word of warning.

It is also of the era where Barbara Gordon was Oracle. And the specter of the murder of Jason Todd still hangs over Bruce Wayne's psyche.

It's a lot for him to be dealing with all at once mentally as all of his enemies descend upon Gotham at once!

Worth checking out if you like 90s US Superhero Comics.

In KnightFall, we are introduced to Bane, a genius who grew up in prison and escaped after being experimented on with some wild steroids. He decides he wants to be King of Gotham, which requires him to take down Batman.

So, Bane frees everyone in Arkham at once, figures out who Batman is, and when he is at his weakest, Bane enters Wayne Manor and breaks Batman's back.

It's a wild story and the first Omnibus ends with Jean-Paul Valley taking on the mantle of the Batman. And...well, he's brutal. And absolutely does not share Wayne's feeling about never killing.

The first omnibus includes 36 individual comics in it!

New Comic Read - Batman: Knightfall, Omnibus Volume 1

Knightfall was one of the first sets of Batman comics I read as a kid. Originally published from 1992-1993, I only read bits and pieces. I remember vividly some of these covers.

Now reading all of the comics, in order, telling the complete story is something different than my original experience only absorbing bits and pieces as a 9 / 10 year old.

It was better.

For those who don't know, Knightfall or the Knight Saga, was a story arc where an already mentally traumatized Bruce Wayne is physically beaten and forced to step aside as Batman temporarily. This is the first part of that saga.

… Childhood confession:
I used to sneak into my brother's room, sit on the floor just to read his comics …

Art from 'Aliens: Reapers' from 1991. This was a short 8 page no dialog comic story by John Arcudi and illustrated by Simon Bisley about 'Reapers' - an alien race that infiltrate Xenomorph hives to eat their eggs. My kinda alien race. 🍳

Hellshock is an 4 issue comic book series from the early days of Image comics written and drawn by Jae Lee. It is a great example of why so many early Image comics did not work. The art is great, (although some of it feels rushed) but like most of the image comics of that time, artists should not write their own comics. The story is short and incoherent and the dialogues are poorly written and cliché.

Issue one has 14 pages of story and the rest is 18 pages of advertisment and art. Issue 4 promises an extra long finale and is just 22 pages... which, compared to issue 1 is indeed extra long.. but still..

Despite all that. Love Jae Lee's artwork.

👊💥 Double Dragon #1 hit comic shops in July 1991, bringing arcade action to the printed page!

Billy & Jimmy Lee stepped off the streets and into full-color chaos.

90s grit, martial arts mayhem, and totally tubular attitude.
